A Quiet Place: 10 Things That Make No Sense About The Movie | CBR

A Quiet Place is a film that takes an interesting approach to horror and science fiction genres. In a world where everyone must live in silence or risk being killed by large creatures, one couple does everything they can to protect their children and survive their terrifying new normal.

A Quiet Place is an innovative film that quickly gained popularity and critical acclaim for its exploration of the human senses, unique plot, and limited dialogue. While this film contains impressive acting and is entertaining and thrilling to watch, there were some confusing elements that took away from the overall viewing experience.

10 There Were No Signs Of Other Survivors In Their Area Or Anywhere Else

A Quiet Place Abandoned City

In a post-apocalyptic world, the population and resources dwindle naturally. Typically when there’s one character like Dr. Robert Neville in I Am Legend or one family like Malorie, Tom, Olympia, and Tom Jr. in Bird Box, that depict the current circumstances, the hope for an end to their nightmare lies with finding a safe haven.

In the aforementioned films, the main characters eventually found sanctuary with government officials or other survivors. But the Abbott family seemed to be completely alone. Though Lee sent out SOS signals daily, aside from the older man that committed suicide, there weren’t any signs of other survivors.

9 The Creatures Affected The Lights

One of the signs that alerted the Abbot family that one of the creatures was nearby, was flickering lights. It was never made clear why the creatures affected the lights. The only things known about the creatures are: they hunt whenever they hear sound, they are armored, they are blind, and there are three in the area.

These are the only facts given to the audience about the creatures through old newspapers and the writings in the basement. Nothing is mentioned about their presence causing lights to flicker.

8 The Family Was Always Barefoot

A Quiet Place Walking Barefoot

It’s understandable why the family chose not to wear shoes. Shoes can be potentially noisy depending on the surface one is walking on. However, it’s weird that the family walks around completely barefoot.

They don’t wear socks nor have they created any kind of gentle footwear to travel in. Even though they do lay out a trail of sand and dirt to walk on, it has been shown that they need to run at a moment’s notice. Remaining barefoot leaves them open to injury.

7 Regan Went Off By Herself Often

Regan blamed herself for the death of her younger brother. As a result, she became very angry and aggressive within the year that followed. She consistently isolated herself and ventured out alone for hours at a time. Though Regan is a very independent young girl, she is left defenseless because her cochlear implant no longer functions.

If there were any loud sounds nearby, Regan would be unable to hear them. When Beau turned on his toy’s siren, Regan didn’t know until her parents turned around, horrified. Given that she is unable to hear any noises around her, it’s strange that her parents felt comfortable with her going off alone so frequently, given that danger was lurking everywhere.

6 A Creature Entered The Soundproof Bunker

Evelyn Hides Behind Water in Basement

To prepare for the birth of their youngest child, Evelyn and Lee created a soundproof bunker. When Evelyn awakens from passing out from exhaustion, Lee reassures her that they are in the bunker and they cannot be heard. When Lee leaves, water fills the bunker as a result of a busted pipe. Whenever Evelyn realizes this, she sees that one of the creatures has entered the bunker.

This scene doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because up until this point, the audience has been told that the creatures are unable to hear small sounds near rushing water and that the bunker is soundproof. Moreover, the creatures are only supposed to attack when they hear sound. It was confusing as to why or how the creature entered the bunker.

5 One Of The Creatures Demolished The Silo

Kids in Silo

While waiting for their father, Regan and Marcus fall into the silo they were waiting on. They are able to save themselves from falling into the grain and suffocating. They manage to do all of this without making much noise.

However, this is another scene where the creatures attack without much cause. The creature relentlessly attacking the terrified siblings seemed to be responding to movement more than sound. This goes against everything the audience was taught about the creatures.

4 The Abandoned Truck Still Ran

In an effort to take shelter, Regan and Marcus run to an abandoned truck. The creature viciously attacked the truck, beating it and stabbing it with its long armored limbs. To distract the creature, Lee sacrifices himself by screaming, causing the creature to leave the truck and attack him.

The next scene shows Regan and Marcus driving up to the house in the same truck. Vehicles make a lot of noise, so it’s unlikely that the Abbot family has used the truck since they discovered the creatures hunt sound. It can be inferred that not only has the truck not run in a while, but no one has put gas in it. It’s reasonable to believe that a truck that hasn’t run and just took a huge beating still worked.

3 Regan Didn’t Think To Take The Batteries Away

When the film begins, the Abbot family is seen in a store collecting essentials and searching for medicine for the eldest son Marcus. While doing this, their youngest son, Beau, picks up a toy that has a loud siren. Lee cautiously takes the toy away, removes the batteries, and leaves it on the counter.

As they are preparing to leave, Regan leaves it for her younger brother to secretly take home. Knowing that sound attracts these deadly creatures, it was foolish of Regan to not only leave the batteries next to the toy but also leave her 4-year-old brother unsupervised.

2 Beau Was Allowed To Trail So Far Behind Everyone

Abbott Family Walking Home From Store

The Abbot family had become accustomed to living cautiously in a dangerous new world. Seeing Evelyn smile while walking home is one of the many subtle nuances that illustrate the family’s level of comfort when walking around outside knowing that these creatures exist.

They know how to stay safe. Still, sound is unpredictable. Therefore, it didn’t seem wise for the family to have their youngest member trail behind them in the back of their family line. He was so far away that Lee was unable to reach him before one of the creatures did.

1 The Waterfall Provided A Sound Buffer That Could’ve Made Life Easier

Lee & Marcus Waterfall

There’s a moment in the film where Lee takes his son Marcus on a fishing trip by a small waterfall to teach him the skills he’d need to learn in order to survive. While there, Marcus was terrified of making a sound, believing they’d easily be heard by the creatures.

Lee reassured Marcus that the water was too loud and small sounds wouldn’t attract the creatures. They have one of the few audible conversations in the film and even enjoy a fun howling session free of fear. With all of the benefits the waterfall provides, it begs the question, why didn’t the Abbot family just live near the waterfall?
