The team behind Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers celebrated the manga reaching a major milestone last week by sharing a new post on Twitter.
The account reposted an original illustration by Wakui, which was first shared on the account in early June and featured the number “20,000,000” in red, with several characters from the series positioned around it. The new social media post celebrated Tokyo Revengers having more than 25 million copies in circulation right now.
It’s worth pointing out that the 25 million copies of Tokyo Revengers currently in circulation number is not a sales statistic, as the figure doesn’t reflect the number of actual copies printed and sold. According to Anime News Network, the manga had a circulation of approximately 10 million copies at the end of March, before the April premiere of the series’ anime adaptation.
The Tokyo Revengers manga began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2017. The series released its 22nd compiled volume on April 16, while a television anime adaptation of the series premiered on April 10. Warner Bros. Japan is also making a live-action film based on Wakui’s manga, which is scheduled to open July 9.
The official synopsis for Tokyo Revengers reads,
Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his six-years-younger boss treats him like an idiot. Plus, he’s a complete and total virgin … At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days!! To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang!!
The anime series is directed by Koichi Hatsumi (Berserk: The Golden Age, Blue Exorcist) with Yasuyuki Muto (Basilisk, Deadman Wonderland) in charge of scripts. The Tokyo Revengers anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
