Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Darkest Fan Theory Suggests Will Is Dead

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a staple of ’90s television and helped launch Will Smith’s career. The show’s theme song is so iconic that it can be recognized by the opening beat alone. The song describes Will getting into a fight and being shipped off to live with his aunt and uncle. But one Reddit theory believes that the theme song actually tells a grim story about the tragic death of the series‘ main character.

The theory posits that the theme song still tells a story. However, rather than a tale about a troublemaker sent to the suburbs to get his life in order, it’s about a young man fighting for his life and dying instead. It also explains that family members like his mom only visit on special occasions like holidays because they are visiting his grave. Therefore, each verse of the song tells the story of Will’s fight and eventual entry into Heaven.

As all fans know, the song begins with Will playing basketball with his friends until he picks a fight and gets beat up. It’s at that moment that his mom says he has to go to Bel-Air. The underlying explanation to the first two lines suggests that following Will’s fight, his injuries are fatal. His mother’s rage represents the slow realization that she has to let her son die. Will’s pushback in the song, “I begged and pleaded with her day after day. But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way, also explains his fight to stay alive while his mother accepts his fate. However, he eventually dies when his mother agrees to turn off his life support. The next lyrics evidence this, stating, “She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. Put my walkman on and said I might as well kick it.

The theory takes its darkest turn as the lyrics describe Will’s hesitation and fear about moving on. “Hmmm, this might be all right. But wait I hear they’re prissy, bourgeois, and all that. Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat?Eventually, Will silences his doubt and, as his soul reaches the great beyond, decides to take his chances on the path set for him. The lyrics “There was a dude looked like a cop standin’ there with my name out. I ain’t tryin’ to get arrested yet I just got here. I sprang with the quickness like lightning disappeared,” may represent the threat of Hell and his decision to try for Heaven before he misses his opportunity.

The rest of the song plays out with Will describing the strange taxi and even stranger driver that takes him to his new home. “If anything I could say that this cab was rare. But I thought, ‘Nah, forget it, yo, Holmes, to Bel-Air!'” The theory believes that the cab driver is God taking him to the kingdom of Heaven. This also adds credence to Will always calling himself the Prince since it’s never properly explained in the show. “I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel-Air.

While somber and a much darker take on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the theory poses some compelling evidence. Will being in Heaven justifies why he never gets married or talks to his fiancé ever again. It also explains why certain cast members come and go, like Will’s old friend Ice Tray. However, with Will’s summer in Philly, the hardships he faces along with the birth of his nephew Nicky ensure that Will is actually alive and well and experiencing the ups and downs of young adulthood.
