Doom Eternal Cancels Invasion Mode, Adds Single-Player Horde Mode

Doom Eternal‘s highly-anticipated Invasion Mode has been canceled and replaced with a single-player Horde Mode.

Announced by developer id Software’s official Twitter page, Invasion Mode is no longer coming to the critically acclaimed first-person shooter Doom Eternal. The studio cites the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as the reason behind the cancelation and apologizes to fans who were excited about the multiplayer mode.

“As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition,” reads the post, written by Marty Stratton, Doom Eternal‘s executive producer. “Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode.”

Stratton did not elaborate on how the new Horde Mode will function, but it will likely see players attempting to survive against endless waves of demons. Beyond this additional single-player mode, id Software is also working on future updates for Doom Eternal‘s dedicated multiplayer offering Battlemode.

“In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of Battlemode that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates and another new map. We expect to share more information at QuakeCon in August,” continues the statement.

Invasion Mode was one of the original gameplay offerings announced for Doom Eternal in 2018. The mode would have allowed players to assume control of a powered-up demon in a fellow player’s campaign in a bid to kill the opposing Doomslayer. Many comparisons were drawn to Dark Souls, which offers a similar feature.

“Throughout it all, we’ve continued to be inspired and energized by your incredible support and enthusiasm for the game – so from each of us, thank you,” concludes the statement.

Doom Eternal, developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, is available now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. The game’s next-gen update is available for free for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners.
