Why NCIS: New Orleans Ended | CBR

The NCIS spin-off NCIS: New Orleans recently ended after Season 7, but its ending was not unexpected. As a result, writers were able to tie up their loose ends during the series finale. They were also able to end the series on a high note, focusing on what made the series such a hit with its fans.

How NCIS: New Orleans Ended

NCIS NOLA Pride and Connor

Over the last couple of episodes, regular cases have still been happening, but the show’s focus has been on Special Agent Pride and his team of agents’ personal lives. Especially for Pride, everything has been a whirlwind. All at once, he found out that his mother has weeks to live, has planned a wedding with Rita Devereaux and found out that he has a son. Unfortunately, his son, Connor, believed that Pride ruined his life by sending his mother to jail years ago. So, the boy has wanted nothing to do with his father.

As events and an FBI investigation progressed, Connor came to see that his mother, Sasha Broussard, was not who he thought she was. His mother was always a conniving criminal mastermind, and he had chosen to ignore it. Pride had been right all along. That, however, did not mean that she didn’t love her son. When the FBI arrested Connor as leverage against his mother, she gave up all of her scapegoat secrets to make a deal for his release. After that, they both decided to enter a witness protection program after Pride’s wedding.

The season finale focused on Pride and Rita’s wedding. Everyone was there as Loretta married the two of them in her back yard under an arbor filled with white roses. After the wedding, they all went back to Pride’s bar to party. When Sasha came to pick up Connor, though, she saw the fun that he was having and decided to leave him with Pride, disappearing into the darkness to rebuild her criminal underworld.

Everyone else ends the series on a high note. Pride’s daughter, Laurel, informs him that she is engaged. Agent Carter, contrary to his usual modus operandi, decided to stay in New Orleans so that he and Hannah can officially be a thing. Also, Gregorio and her girlfriend are moving in together while Sebastian is happy for them.

One monologue was of particular note. Before the reception started, Pride stopped and thanked his friends for the wedding, but what he said was also an address to fans of the show: “Thank you, each and every one of you for making this night happen so fast. To be able to carve out a night like this after the year we’ve been through, and share it with the people we love in this city we love, is a gift. Tomorrow we’re back at it because there’s work to do, but tonight, let’s say, ‘Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler,’” which translates to “let the good times roll.” The series ended with a wedding parade through the streets of New Orleans, celebrating the music and family that the series was founded on.

Why NCIS: New Orleans Ended

To put it simply, ratings weren’t high enough. The show could not muster even half of the viewers as the original NCIS, and there were significantly less viewers for Season 7 than there were for Season 6. Another reason was a large drop off in viewers between NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans, even though the shows aired back to back.

Perhaps the biggest reason, as reports say, is that CBS wants to focus on its new show, NCIS: Hawaii. In fact, Chris Silber and Jan Nash, who were the showrunners from NCIS: New Orleans, will helm the latest spin-off in the same roles. NCIS: Hawaii will premiere this Fall on Monday nights at 10:00 p.m. ET.
