One Piece: 10 Times Usopp Was Completely Insufferable | CBR

Usopp was the sniper of the Straw Hat pirates in the One Piece universe and one of his crew’s weakest members. Despite his creativity and the many instances where he was responsible for saving the day, the man is deeply flawed and can be profoundly insufferable in certain instances.

His bizarre combination of cowardice and bravado has often put him in impossible circumstances that ultimately reflect poorly on his character. By identifying some of Usopp’s worst moments, we can better analyze how his claims of “godhood” are questionable at best.

10 Usopp Was Continuously Beaten Up By The Franky Family

When attempting to retrieve the stolen bounty of two hundred million berries from the Franky Family, Usopp was ruthlessly beaten up. After being healed by Chopper, he made another failed effort to reclaim the money he lost.

Although he could have easily enlisted the help of the other Straw Hats, Usopp was more interested in placating his own ego since he was wrestling with insecurity about being useless. As a result, Franky had already spent his stolen money by the time Luffy caught up with him. Fortunately, he happened to use it to purchase the materials necessary for the Thousand Sunny.

9 Usopp Almost Abandoned Leo In Dressrosa

When the mission to free the toys enslaved by Doflamingo started to take a turn for the worse, Usopp was only interested in self-preservation. Despite the promises he made to Leo and the fact that Robin had been turned into a doll, he was content in abandoning them to preserve himself.

He turned around only after his character was repeatedly attacked by Trebol over a transponder snail. Even once he returned to save the day, he scolded the Tontatta for their gullibility.

8 Usopp’s Lying Put All Of Syrup Village At Risk By Constantly Crying Wolf

Usopp habitually lied to the denizens of Syrup Village by claiming that a pirate incursion was just on the horizon. After the first few deceptions, the peasants quickly became exasperated by his antics and refused to believe him when there was an actual threat to be dealt with.

Should Luffy and his crewmates not have been there in order to defeat Kuro, the Black Cat pirates would have massacred the helpless and unprepared population – all while Usopp could only watch in horror.

7 Usopp Failed To Properly Deal With Perona

One Piece - Usopp and Perona

Although Usopp was the only person capable of defeating Perona due to his naturally negative disposition, he failed to permanently remove her from the escalating conflict of Thriller Bark. Consequently, she took her minions to pillage the Thousand Sunny as soon as she woke up.

Were it not for the unprecedented intervention of Kuma, the Straw Hats would have nothing to leave the haunted ship-island on after Gecko Moria was defeated. Usopp’s irresponsibility put his crewmates and Franky’s finest work in serious danger.

6 Usopp Wasted Heracles’ Time When Training

After Usopp was separated from the crew by Kuma, he landed on a mostly deserted island and came across Heracles. Once he was shown that most of the terrain was edible, he began to gorge himself regardless of his new friend’s warnings as to the region’s many dangers.

His rampant gluttony was so horrendous that he almost died on dozens of instances to natural predators, only to be narrowly saved by Heracles after pleading for his life. Usopp put up the most resistance to his mentor out of any of the Straw Hat pirates.

5 Usopp Scammed Skypiea’s Denizens Into Giving Him Impact Dials

Before leaving Skypiea, Usopp was interested in procuring impact dials from many of the kingdom’s denizens. Since they had their own currency and didn’t accept berries, he traded them for rubber bands, exaggerating their power using Luffy’s victory over Eneru.

In essence, he was riding off the coattails of his captain’s success in order to scam the gullible and increase his own personal power. However, the dials were able to minimize the damage that the Going Merry suffered when returning from the clouds.

4 Usopp Attempted To Intimidate The Straw Hats When He First Met Them

Usopp Makes An Empty Boast

When Usopp first met the Straw Hat pirates, he attempted to coerce them into turning around. To accomplish this, he dramatically exaggerated the size of his crew, as well as his own personal strength (making the absurd proclamation that eight thousand warriors served under his command).

This failed to deter anyone – worse yet, it made for a terrible impression, as he would soon be living among the people he just threatened. In the end, Luffy would have braved his village even if his claims were actually true.

3 Usopp Was A Burden To Zoro At Enies Lobby

Zoro utilizes Usopp as a sword

Usopp accidentally got himself shackled to Zoro during the events of the Enies Lobby arc. Not only did this minorly encumber the swordsman’s speed (which he would need to face off against two of CP9’s strongest agents simultaneously), it also prevented him from being useful and contributing to his crew.

Fortunately, Jabra and Kaku spent most of their time bickering among themselves. This allowed the other Straw Hats to return with the key, liberating Zoro from Usopp and allowing him to finish the fight unburdened.

2 Usopp Treated Brook Like A Monster When He First Met Him

The first meeting between Usopp and Brook was less than amicable. After Luffy brought him aboard the Thousand Sunny, Usopp immediately dressed himself up in exorcist regalia and treated the musician like a monster. He even convinced Chopper to root for him as a hero.

His behavior was in spite of the fact that Brook had been nothing but hospitable up until that point and had already won Luffy’s approval. Fortunately, Usopp would unlearn his prejudices as his skeletal companion proved his worth to the team.

1 Usopp Challenged Luffy’s Authority As Captain

One Piece standoff Luffy vs. Usopp

Arguably Usopp’s greatest trespass is when he openly challenged Luffy for the Going Merry. He undermined his authority as captain, openly disparaged him before the rest of the crew, and stated his intentions to defect after he reclaimed an irrevocably broken ship.

The sniper’s actions were underlying symptoms of his insecurity. Like the Merry, he was beginning to feel washed up and worthless. Although Usopp held up against Luffy much better than expected, the Straw Hat captain still defeated him in their climactic battle on the outskirts of Water Seven.
