WARNING: The following contains spoilers for NBC’s Good Girls Season 4, Episode 9, “Chef Boyardee.”
In NBC’s Good Girls, one of the biggest problems in the show has been Annie’s (Mae Whitman) immaturity. She often complicates the criminal endeavours of Beth (Christina Hendricks) and Ruby (Retta) with all her personal problems, but Season 4 has found her on more stable ground. Sadly, Annie undoes a lot of her progress when she solves a major problem with her son, Ben, by creating another that will severely affect her home.
Annie needs to get her stuff in order so she can attain financial aid for Ben at his new school. She knows her ex is in financial disarray, so Annie decides to foot the bill at the new prep school where Ben’s finally happy, but it’s at a hefty cost. Still, Annie doesn’t want to break the momentum as he’s playing sports and adjusting to life after his gender transition pretty well — something never seen before.
The problem is, she has no one else she can rely on. Beth’s up to her neck in mortgages and married to Dean so that fraud would be obvious. Ruby has her family with Stan, so Annie can’t ask her either as all she needs is someone to share her address. This is where Annie’s most regretful fling, Kevin, comes into play. He’s homeless, which was a weird fetish Annie had in their dalliances, and this creates the ultimate trump card.
She’s desperate, so she visits him in his car and asks him to sign the paperwork. She basically needs him to fake being her significant other, and so he does. However, he tells her to leave him alone as he’s down on his luck and hates being used.
Annie succeeds with the project days later, but when breaking the news to Ben, Annie reveals a major change to their domestic life. Apparently, a tree fell on Kevin’s car so he needs a new home, which ironically, Annie can provide. Ben’s stunned as he’s always chided his mom for sleeping with Kevin, plus he’s sensitive about their home environment as he’s always babysat Annie.
As for Annie, it might be that Kevin strong-armed her into this move, but she was feeling a bit guilty. It may even turn into romance again, but since he really is that kooky, it’ll frustrate Ben and set up a lot of arguments. Also worth noting is that if Kevin gets wind of Annie’s criminal empire, he could blackmail her for money or want in. Plus, if he knows, he could slip up and let Ben know the dark truth about Annie’s extracurriculars with the ladies.
