When traversing through the Nine Hells in Dungeons and Dragons, players should be wary of crossing paths with the Archdevils.
The Nine Hells of Baator is one of the major Outer Planes in Dungeons and Dragons lore. The Nine Hells embody lawful evil as Devils roam through each of the nine layers, all battling against the Demons in the eternal Blood War.
Throughout the Nine Hells are many Archdevils who all either rule one of the Nine Layers or are pinning to rule them all. Each Archdevil is immensely powerful and calculating want. They each crave more power. These Archdevils should be avoided if Players want their characters to live happy and successful lives.
10 Bel Is The Former Ruler Who Is Pinning To Earn His Throne Back
Bel is the former ruler of Avernus, the first and largest layer of Hell. Bel is a cold and calculating General. Being Lord of Avernus means they are front and center against a horde of Demons as Avernus is in a constant state of battle and war.
Bel is the ever-patient general. However, he is ruthless and calculating in his tactics. If he wants someone dead, he will wait until the time is right to ambush his foe. Bel’s major flaw lies in his suspicion of magic and chooses to be proficient in his material progress.
9 Zariel Is A The Quick-Tempered Archduchuss Who Craves Battle
Zariel is the current Archduchess of Avernus and is as brutal as she is powerful. Zariel was once an Angel of the Seven Heavens who decided that she wanted to join in on the battle after watching the Blood War ensue.
Zariel is a reckless fighter, often opting to use a blitz style of fighting to overwhelm her foes. However, the difference between her and other generals is that she will likely win any fight she is up against. However, Zariels has a Join or Die mentality regarding her recruitment strategy. Players should avoid her lest they are forced to fight in the Blood War.
8 Dispater Is Paranoid Of Everything And Everyone
Dispater is the Ryler of the Second Layer of Hell Dis. Dis is the metropolis of Hell. It is arguably where the calmer and more reserved Devils are held. Dispater being the most reserved out of them all.
Dispater rules from his Iron Throne, which lies in the center of the city of Dis. Dispater’s claim to fame is the Iron Tower from which he resides. It is a nearly impenetrable fortress as Dispater lies in the center, scheming how he is to take control of Baator. His flaw is his own paranoia about being betrayed at any moment.
7 Mammon Is The Richest Being In All Of The Multiverse
Mammon is the lord of greed and the Archdevil of the third layer Minauros. This bog-liked layer is filled with all-consuming pollution. Many devils even support mammon’s fortress to keep it from sinking into the bog.
Mammon is more selfish than any of the other Archdevils. He will not reason with anyone and constantly craves all of the riches in the multiverse. He often speaks in cryptic sentences and constantly babbles about his plans. Best not to owe anything to this Archdevil.
6 Fierna Is The Youngest Of The Archdevils But Never Underestimate Her
Fierna is the ruler of the fourth layer of hell, Phlegethos. The area is a deep, bleak, volcanic region. Volcanos would be an apt description of Fierna. With a quick temper that will make her turn on anyone in an instant, she is definitely fiery.
Make no mistake though, she is crafty as well, if not more so than most of the other Archdevils. She often uses her innocent-looking stature to lure many unsuspecting heroes into her palace, and then turns on them to make those heroes her eternal soldiers.
5 Levistus Is The Eternally Trapped Archdevil Who is Essentially A Psychic Ice Block
Levistus is not popular with the other Archdevils, by any means. He attempted to overthrow the Throne and was punished for all eternity to remain in an ice block. He is the ruler of Stygia, which is one of the colder layers in the Nine Hells.
Though he is trapped in his icy tomb, he is still pursuing his goals. He has one of the largest networks of spies at his disposal. Each of them feeds him all information they could find. If he were ever to escape his tomb, it could mean the destruction of the Outer Planes.
4 Glasya Is The Daughter Of The Lord Of Hell And Quite The Mechivious Archdevil
Glasya is the Archdevil of Malbolge. This layer is another metropolis much like Dis. The difference is that Malbolge is a sprawling maze of caverns and pathways, making it difficult to traverse. It is Glasya’s playground.
Glasya is one of the few Archdevils to bend the rules a little to suit her needs. She will often skirt around other Archdevils’ plans and does not obey some of the laws of the Nine Hells. This gives her an advantage for her schemes and makes her a difficult Archdevil to reason with.
3 Baalzebul Is The Once Beaturiful Archon (Now Giant Slug)
Baalzebul used to be an angel like Zariel, but he too fell to the desires of Hell and was transformed into a disgusting slug. He is the ruler of Maladomini, a large and volcanic layer filled with abandoned cities as far as the eye can see. The reason for these abandoned cities is Baalzebul’s perfectionism.
Baalzebul wants to create the perfect metropolis. This was his desire when he was an angel in Mount Celestia, and his desire became his obsession. This perfectionism makes him the cruelest slaver as he often forces them through countless grueling tasks.
2 Mephistopheles Is Likely The Most Proficient Wizard In All Of The Nine Hells
Mephistopheles is Baator’s Archwizard as much as he is an Archdevil. He is the ruler of Cania, the coldest layer and place in all Outer Planes. Mephistopheles is much more terrifying than most of the other Archdevils due to his vast knowledge of the Arcane Arts.
Mephistopheles thirsts not for control of everything but to increase his vast knowledge of the Multiverse. This craving for knowledge sets him back as he is in a constant state of pursuit rather than scheming. Nevertheless, if players were to cross paths, they are in for a magical battle unlike anything else.
1 Asmodeus Is Lord Of The Nine Hells And On Par With Most Deities
Ah, Asmodeus. The Lord of the ninth layer, Nessus. Nessus only contains one location and that is the throne of Asmodeus. Aside from being the most powerful Archdevil out of every other Archdevil, he is the true mastermind of The Nine Hells.
He is the one that made Zariel and Baalzebul fall. He trapped Levistus in his icy tomb. He is the father of Glasya, and he feeds paranoia to all of the other Archdevils. Do not (under any circumstances) make a deal with him.
