Thanos Revealed His One Weakness Is Pride – But He May Be Wrong

The Mad Titan Thanos is arguably one of the most powerful and dangerous entities in the entire Marvel Universe, and due to his role in the MCU, also one of the most recognizable. Possessing immense measures of power, armies spanning the cosmos, and an insatiable love for Death, Thanos often seems nigh unbeatable. But the Mad Titan once revealed what he believed his single most terrible weakness to be: his pride, but whether or not that is entirely accurate is up for debate.

Thanos’s first appearance was in Iron Man #55 by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich in 1973. Thanos’s very first mission set the stage for all of his future endeavors: seeking to impress Mistress Death, the cosmic embodiment of death itself, Thanos sought out the Cosmic Cube, an artifact capable of bending reality. The combined might of the original Captain Marvel and the Avengers was able to defeat Thanos and prevent him from using the Cube.

Over the years Thanos would appear time and time again, always inching closer and closer towards his ultimate goal of winning Mistress Death’s love. Thanos’s mission to gain Mistress Death as a lover culminated in one of the biggest events in comic history: the Infinity Gauntlet saga. It was there that Thanos gained control of all of the Infinity Gems and crafted them into a single gauntlet, the Infinity Gauntlet, and became the single most powerful force in all of existence.

The Infinity Gauntlet arc became the basis for the MCU, which adapted a majority of the story’s plot points into the films. In the MCU, the Infinity Gems were renamed the Infinity Stones despite serving the same function and purpose. Thanos still sought to gain all of the gems in order to create the Infinity Gauntlet, although his personal motivation was no longer simply to woo over Mistress Death; instead, Thanos claimed to want to create perfect cosmic balance by wiping out half of all sentient life. This act, known as The Blip in the MCU, was immortalized in the comics and single-handedly proved how terrifyingly powerful Thanos was.

Despite Thanos’s powers exceeding that of the gods and even the celestial abstracts themselves, defeat waited for him at the end of the story. As the twists and turns mounted higher and higher, the Infinity Gauntlet came to a climax when Thanos stated, “Pride – My One Fatal Flaw” before self-detonating a nuclear bomb hidden within his belt. As fitting an end as possible for one as mad as Thanos, his rare moment of self-reflection raises an interesting question: if Thanos were to have a single flaw, would it be pride, and if so, would it be enough for him to lose his battles?  Over the years it’s become a bit of a recurring element for Thanos to admit that deep down he doesn’t truly desire total omnipotence: even Adam Warlock states that to him during the Infinity Gauntlet event. Singling out his pride as his sole weakness is a means to ensure that there’s an escape hatch for the heroes battling him.

As odd as it might seem to say aloud, one of Thanos’s biggest flaws appears to be his love for Death. His love was what inspired him in his first appearance, in the Infinity Gauntlet story, and even in The Thanos Imperative event by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. His love is muddled and distorted by fanaticism, obsession, and arrogance. Thanos has been told Death wants nothing to do with him and that she would never love him but he always ignores her wants and needs, falling further and further into a maddened desire for her. Thanos’s pride clouds his judgment and sets him up to fail, but it would be erroneous to think that was his only flaw or that it could be his worst.

While pride is a terrible weakness in Thanos, his obsession with Death would be an even bigger flaw in him. Unlike his pride, Thanos would probably never admit that. The MCU Thanos lost not by self-sabotage, but by the combined forces of all the heroes that defied him. He was proud, but always calculated and collected. Regardless of his incarnation, Thanos is a surprisingly multi-faceted character that suffers from more than just an inflated ego, and the day he overcomes his flaws is the day the universe will know true terror.
