Based on Sega’s flagship video game franchise, Fowler’s first Sonic the Hedgehog movie sped into theaters on Feb. 14, 2020. A sequel was confirmed to be in development at Paramount Pictures the following May, with director Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller returning. Production on the sequel began this past March.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently scheduled for release on April 8, 2022. Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell are all set to reprise their roles as Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Tom Wachowski, Maddie Wachowski, Wade Whipple and Rachel, respectively. Additionally, Shemar Moore has boarded the sequel in an undisclosed role.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also set to prominently feature the characters of Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles the Echidna, the former of whom actually made a cameo at the end of the first film. In 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails was voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has voiced the character in numerous video games and animated projects since 2014. That being said, it has yet to be officially confirmed if O’Shaughnessey will once again reprise her role as Sonic’s right-hand man for the upcoming film sequel.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore. The film will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
