Rick and Morty Creator Brings Strange Planet Animated Series to Apple

Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is teaming up with Nathan Pyle to bring Pyle’s Strange Planet webcomic and books to television.

Apple TV+ recently ordered a 10-episode first season for an animated series based on Pyle’s webcomic and graphic novels of the same name, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Like the other versions of Strange Planet, the series will tell heartfelt stories about beings on a distant planet and will be produced in-house at Apple’s recently launched Apple Studios alongside animation production house ShadowMachine.

Harmon will be credited as a co-creator alongside Pyle, and the duo will executive produce alongside showrunner Amalia Levari. Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico will also executive produce for ShadowMachine alongside Steve Levy and Pyle’s wife, Taylor Alexy Pyle.

Illustrator and author Pyle launched the Strange Planet webcomic in 2019, which followed a planet of genderless aliens who want to learn more about the human race. After gaining traction on social media, Pyle published the first Strange Planet book in November 2019. He released the follow-up, Stranger Planet, in 2020. Pyle also previously contributed designs to Harmon’s NBC comedy Community and has published multiple New York Times bestsellers.

Strange Planet will serve as the second original animated series from Apple, the only other one being the Disney-owned Central Park. The series will be Harmon’s fourth animated series, following the Adult Swim megahit Rick and Morty, as well as Fox’s upcoming Krapopolis and FXX’s recently ordered Little Demon.

Created by Dan Harmon and Nathan Pyle, the Strange Planet series has yet to be given a release date.
