Adult Swim has released a new promo for the upcoming Rick and Morty episode “Mortyplicity,” with the family about to partake in some cloning antics.
Titled “Mortyplicity,” the second episode of the fifth season is a reference to the 1996 film Multiplicity, in which the main character, played by Michael Keaton, clones himself as a means of handling all his daily obligations. The reference, along with the episode’s TV logline which reads, “Who’s even real, broh? Are you real? Broh?” suggests that the episode will prominently feature clones of the main characters. The promo for the episode, which drops Space Beth‘s name, seemingly confirms this theory.
In the promo, the family leaves their house in a rush at Rick’s command. “A lot of people want a piece of this,” says Rick. “After that trouble with Space Beth, I made passable copies of the family and placed them around the country as a buffer zone to protect [us].” Space Beth was introduced in the finale of Season 4, where she returned to Earth in an attempt to kill Rick (and then Beth). It’s not clear whether the upcoming episode will see Space Beth’s return but nonetheless, it’s clear that fans will be encountering some clones.
Adult Swim surprised fans by uploading the first episode of Rick and Morty‘s fifth season directly to YouTube. The episode is completely uncensored and does not appear to be region-locked. While it’s unlikely that the rest of the season will be accessible through YouTube, the gesture has been appreciated by fans who are unable to watch the episode through more conventional means.
