REPORT: NXT Interested in Samoa Joe Return | CBR

Samoa Joe may be coming back to WWE NXT after his release from the media company last April.

Fightful Select broke the story about the pro wrestler and color commentator possibly being considered for a return to the brand division, in which he made his WWE in-ring debut over six years ago. Rumors originating from NXT wrestlers and staff members have reportedly surfaced claiming that Joe has been tapped by NXT officials to rejoin the division. Though unconfirmed, the accounts of this potential reversal echo similar stories that Aleister Black may also be on his way back into the WWE fold, although Black is expected to be signing with AEW instead.

WWE announced Joe’s release on April 15, just days after he had been let go from his commentator role on Monday Night Raw. His departure in the wake of Wrestlemania 37 was timed to coincide with those of several WWE Superstars, namely Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mickie James, Chelsea Green, Tucker, Kalisto, Bo Dallas and Wesley Blake. The announcement came as a surprise to many, as his leaving the position at Raw was assumed by some to mark a transition back into the ring.

While the recent purge of wrestlers from the WWE roster would seem to indicate the need for severe budget cuts, NXT officials are reputedly serious about resigning the veteran of TNA and ROH, with multiple sources both inside and outside NXT saying that officials there want him back in the ring. A two-time NXT Champion, Joe had his last match on Feb. 10, 2020, which resulted in an eight-man tag team loss. His potential about-face, while remaining uncertain, has left fans speculating about Joe’s future in wrestling.
