Batman ’89 Comic Brings Bullock to the Burtonverse | CBR

Batman ’89 artist Joe Quinones has teased an addition to director Tim Burton’s Batman movie universe — a well-known but controversial member of the Gotham Police Department, Harvey Bullock.

Quinones recently tweeted a drawing of Bullock holding open his wallet to display his police shield, with the caption, “Just one more thing,” the catchphrase of TV’s Lt. Columbo.

Bullock first appeared in a cameo in 1974’s Detective Comics #441. He became a regular player in the Dark Knight’s world starting with 1983’s Batman #361 as part of a political corruption story in which Gotham’s mayor and police chief want to force out Commissioner Gordon and assign Bullock to him specifically to be a thorn in his side side. Bullock eventually reforms after his slobbish, corrupt tendencies cause Gordon to suffer a heart attack. Subsequent stories have retconned the notion of Bullock being corrupt, re-presenting him as hard-nosed but honest, yet willing to bend the rules in the name of justice.

Bullock did not appear in 1989’s Batman, though a similar character named Lt. Max Eckhardt (played by the late William Hootkins) did. Bullock was featured in Batman ’89 writer Sam Hamm’s original script for Batman Returns, only for the character to be removed after Burton signed on to direct the sequel. The character finally made his way live-action via the 2014 TV series Gotham, on which he was played by Donal Logue.
