A street in the Bronx borough of New York City has been co-named after one of its most famous residents: Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee.
As reported on by TheRealStanLee.com, the segment of University Way between Brandt Place and West 176th Street will be co-named Stan Lee Way. The re-naming ceremony took place on June 10, presided over by city councilperson Fernando Cabrera, who spearheaded the initiative two years prior. “Stan Lee was a Bronx native who grew up in my district,” Cabrera said when he first introduced the initiative. “Mr. Lee’s amazing talent brought joy and entertainment to countless children and adults and he deserves to be permanently memorialized in his home borough, the Bronx.”
Lee grew up in the Bronx, at one time living in an apartment at 1720 University Way and attending Dewitt Clinton High School, which he graduated from in 1939. Students from Lee’s alma mater were in attendance at the ceremony. Rafael Class, a junior at the school, said, “When you walk in Clinton, we have the portraits of him…it’s inspiration like you never know what could come out of the Bronx.”
Lee began working for Marvel (then Timely Comics) in 1939 and would go on to co-create some of the company’s most iconic heroes, including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men and countless more. He passed away on Nov. 12, 2018, six weeks before his 96th birthday.
