The Flash: Carlos Valdes’ Exit Episode Featured a Deep Callback to the Pilot

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7, Episode 12, “Good-Bye Vibrations,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.

Carlos Valdes made his exit from his longtime role as Cisco Ramon on The Flash and the episode had a deep musical callback to Valdes’ first episode of the series, which was the first episode of the show period.

Cisco is leaving Star City for a new job, but after helping the good guys take down the Rainbow Raider, they all gathered at Barry and Iris’ loft to celebrate Cisco’s departure by having a karaoke party with a fun performance of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” This is a clever call back to the series premiere of the series.

You see, way back in the first episode, Barry Allen was still in a coma after the Particle Accelerator explosion and getting struck by lightning and Cisco kept playing him “Poker Face.” When he woke up, Barry was very confused at why his friend kept playing that song and Cisco explained that it was listed on Facebook as Barry’s favorite song (which confused Barry, as he had no idea why it would say that).

When Valdes heard about the karaoke scene, he was a bit concerned. He told EW, “I thought it was going to be a disaster, because in my life karaoke usually is. But it actually ended up being a lot of fun.”

He was also worried about the lyrics of the song, “I was looking up the lyrics to the song to prepare for that scene, and I thought to myself, ‘Why? Why would they choose to write a karaoke scene for this song?’ I mean, I get why: It’s this beautiful full-circle [moment] that I actually absolutely love, but when you look at the ‘Poker Face’ lyrics, this is not safe for work. This is not for the children.”

Luckily for him, the show didn’t use the original version of the lyrics, “To my relief, we showed up and did karaoke, and there’s a much more family-friendly version that was on the screen. But yeah, it ended up being a lot of fun.”

Also luckily for Valdes, he’s not saying goodbye for good, as he’ll be returning for the final two episodes of the series.
