WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Immortal Hulk #47 by Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy Jose, Belardino Brabo, Paul Mounts & VC’s Cory Petit, on sale now.
The Hulk has been experiencing many trials in recent issues of Immortal Hulk. After losing most of his strength Bruce Banner was trapped in the Below-Place, and Henry Peter Gyrich is now doing everything in his power to have Hulk terminated.
After the U-Foes failed to stop Hulk, Gyrich used his position in the government to call in the Avengers. Even Hulk’s former friends and teammates attacked with ruthless aggression, believing the Jade Giant to be a serious threat. Thor did what he could to put down Hulk in a shocking act of brutality. Even Black Panther refused to hold back in this attack. Fortunately for the Hulk, one Avenger refused to take part in the attack in Immortal Hulk #47, and She-Hulk betrayed the team to fight alongside her cousin.

Hulk was sitting at a bar when Thor attacked last issue. Gyrich had set up the U-Foes’ previous battle with Hulk to make it look like the Jade Giant was to blame for the fight. The Avengers brutally attacked, believing Gyrich’s claims that the monster needed to be stopped, with only Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk, sensing that not all was as it seemed. After speaking with Harpy, the monstrous alternate form of Betty Ross, about the Green Door, She-Hulk finally chose to come to the aid of her cousin.
Aside from being related to Bruce Banner, Jennifer had another reason for her actions. She knows about the existence of the Green Door that allows gamma mutates to resurrect after death, and she also knew that something was wrong with it. She is also aware of the interference of the Leader, aka Samuel Sterns, a longtime enemy of the Hulk, who is working with the One-Below-All to dismantle the Hulk’s life. Deep down inside, she knows that her cousin is inherently good, even if his core personality is not the one in control, and that he needs help more than a beating.
Jennifer Walters last saw the Green Door in the Empyre crossover series by Al Ewing and Dan Slott, when the Cotati killed her and took control of her body. She returned in the end, but not before she faced exposure to the Green Door, which is the barrier between Earth and the Below-Place, and the home of the One-Below-All and the means by which the Hulks return to life.
When Jennifer Walters died in Empyre, she saw the Green Door, but failed to remember the experience when she returned to life. However, when Harpy asked Jennifer about the Green Door, She-Hulk suddenly recalled the place, and her experience there. From there, she realized that something was seriously wrong.
Altogether, those experiences were enough to get her to betray the Avengers and side with the Hulkas and Gamma Flight to take on some of the darkest forces in the history of the Marvel Universe.
