Far Cry 6 narrative director Navid Khavari has confirmed that the game is “political.”
Announced in a blog post on Ubisoft’s official website, the statement comes in the wake of statements that Far Cry 6 will continue Ubisoft’s trend of tackling complex societal issues in apolitical manners. Khavari states that the upcoming open-world shooter will be explicitly political as it explores the game’s scenario of a revolution to overthrow a fascist dictator in the Cuba-inspired island of Yara.
“Our story is political. A story about a modern revolution must be. There are hard, relevant discussions in Far Cry 6 about the conditions that lead to the rise of fascism in a nation, the costs of imperialism, forced labor, the need for free-and-fair elections, LGBTQ+ rights, and more within the context of Yara, a fictional island in the Caribbean,” reads the post.

The confirmation of Far Cry 6′s political attitudes is likely a result of recent comments made by Khavari that the developer didn’t “want to make a political statement” regarding Cuba’s past or current affairs. This echoed Ubisoft’s previous sentiments regarding its catalog as the publisher has attempted to convince fans that none of its games have political messages. This has widely been met with confusion considering several major Ubisoft franchises, like Watch Dogs and Tom Clancy’s: The Division, have overtly political themes and tones.
“The conversations and research done on the perspectives of those who fought revolutions in the late 1950s, early 1960s, and beyond are absolutely reflected in our story and characters. But if anyone is seeking a simplified, binary political statement specifically on the current political climate in Cuba, they won’t find it,” continues Khavari.
“My only hope is that we are willing to let the story speak for itself first before forming hard opinions on its political reflections,” concludes the post.
Announced in 2020, Far Cry 6 received its first gameplay trailer towards the end of May 2021. Players will assume the role of Dani Rojas, a revolutionary fighting to free the fictional country of Yara from the tyrannical reign of dictator Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad).
Far Cry 6 launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Oct. 7, 2021.
