Sanji is the chef of the Straw Hat Pirates and the third strongest member of the crew, behind Luffy and Zoro. Although Sanji was born without any special powers like his siblings, years of training under Zeff meant that he got tremendously powerful growing up.
While Sanji’s strength as a part of One Piece’s Monster Trio is tremendously useful to the crew, an even bigger asset of his character is his kindness, which he has displayed on several occasions throughout his journey with the Straw Hat Pirates in the story.
10 When He Fed Gin Instead Of Kicking Him Out Of Baratie
Sanji’s debut painted him as a brute who beat up Fullbody for wasting food, but moments later, the depth of his character was hinted at when Gin, who was thrown out of Baratie by Patty, was given food for free by Sanji. Sanji understood Gin’s pain which stemmed from hunger as he was in a similar situation once. To him, no treasure in the world can compare to food and that led him to follow his morals and feed Gin, even when he had no money to pay to him.
9 When He Cooked For Don Krieg & His Dying Men
After Gin’s return to Baratie with Krieg, one of East Blue’s strongest, and his crew, Sanji decided to cook for Don Krieg even though he knew this decision could’ve led to the restaurant getting destroyed. Once again, Sanji proved that no matter what, if a person is hungry, his job is to feed them first. Later, he was attacked by Krieg as his strength came back to him, but surprisingly, Sanji wanted to save the lives of Krieg’s crewmates as well and he, along with Zeff, decided to cook for them regardless of what they’d do later.
8 When He Was Ready To Give His Life For Zoro
In One Piece’s Thriller Bark arc, Zoro was ready to sacrifice his life and his ambition for Luffy’s sake, but Sanji, who is often wrongly perceived to hate Zoro, stepped in and wanted to sacrifice himself to save Zoro and his dream. To Sanji, the lives and the dreams of his crewmates were far important than his own, which he never valued much to begin with. Ultimately, Zoro decided to step in and stay true to his promise to Kuma.
7 When He Saved Kin’emon Against Everyone’s Wishes In Punk Hazard
Kin’emon is a samurai from the Land of Wano who made his debut in the Punk Hazard arc of One Piece. His introduction painted him as a mass murderer who cut down several people on the island, which led the Straw Hats like Franky, Chopper, and Nami to doubt him.
Sanji was the only member of the crew who decided to take responsibility for Kin and took his head with him. Later, Sanji even put Nami’s body in harm’s way to save Kin’emon’s torso in a lake.
6 When He Saved The G-5 Members From Vergo
The G-5 is a unit of the Marines known to include people who are very cruel and merciless to all pirates in the world. Despite that and the fact that they were enemies from the get-go, Sanji decided to save Tashigi from Vergo. If that’s not enough, he went ahead and decided to save the injured members of the G-5 and rescue them from the poisonous gas that was filling the area. Thanks to him, the kids of Punk Hazard were saved later.
5 When He Saved The People Of The Mink Tribe From Jack’s Assault
During One Piece’s Zou arc, the inhabitants of Mokomo Dukedom were attacked by Jack the Drought, who was in search of a Samurai named Raizo. Refusing to give him up, the Minks were left on the brink of death when Sanji and the Twirly Hat Crew arrived on the island. On Sanji’s order, Caesar purified the Koro gas and the group decided to help them, which in turn made minks strong allies of the Straw Hat Pirates
4 When He Gave His Life Up To Save Zeff From Big Mom
Sanji’s character has often revolved more heavily around sacrificing his life for the sake of those he loves because he values them more than himself. During the Whole Cake Island arc, this was displayed once again when he decided to let himself get killed alongside his family if it meant the Straw Hat Pirates and Zeff were spared from the wrath of the Yonko.
Sanji was eventually talked out of this by none other than Luffy, and together, the two decided to invade the Tea Party.
3 When He Was Honest With Pudding Despite Her Killing Intent
Pudding’s goal throughout the Whole Cake Island arc was to manipulate and kill Sanji, as ordered by Big Mom herself. However, when the decisive moment arrived, Pudding faltered because of Sanji’s kindness. Instead of being disgusted by her like most people, Sanji couldn’t help but appreciate her beauty, and then protected her from her own family, leading Pudding to fall in love with him.
2 When He Saved His Family Who Despised Him
Yet another act of kindness from Sanji came when he decided to save his family even after the horrible treatment he received from them throughout his childhood. Despite being bullied, abused, and even disowned, Sanji couldn’t bring himself to abandon them to their inevitable deaths. Luffy, understanding his decision, decided to help him save his family, after which the two left Whole Cake Island.
1 When He Fed Big Mom The Wedding Cake
Big Mom, one of the Yonko, was the main antagonist of the Whole Cake Island arc. Having been subject to great misery by the Straw Hats and their allies, Big Mom wanted to kill all of them. Despite that, Sanji fed her with the Wedding Cake and thus helped her. Interestingly, Sanji baking the cake saved the Straw Hats from inevitable death, and later, the short delay it caused led to the crew safely escaping Totland.
