Lucifer Reveals How God Avoids Lying | CBR

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Lucifer Season 5B, streaming now on Netflix.

At the end of Lucifer Season 5A, God appeared on Earth to break up a fight between Samael, Amenadiel, Michael and Maze, making clear that family drama was going to play a big part in Season 5B. And Season 5B is indeed filled with family drama, including a tense confrontation between Lucifer and his father in which the former reveals how the latter avoids lying.

After breaking up the fight between his children, God invites everyone to a family dinner. While Michael attempts to suck up to his father, Lucifer remains indignant about all of the things that have happened. This eventually leads to a conversation about God’s poor treatment of his children, with even Amenadiel saying he wouldn’t treat his own child in that same way. Eventually, Lucifer asks God if he even loves them. He gives an evasive answer, saying, “If I have to tell you, then I really have failed.” In response, Lucifer freaks out and says that answer is a no. Amenadiel tries to defend his father, noting that his answer was ambiguous, but Lucifer replies, “When I don’t wanna lie, I don’t answer the question. Picked that up from you, Dad.” Lucifer then calls God incapable of love and storms out on their dinner.

Following this conversation, Lucifer essentially tells Chloe that he can’t possibly love her, because it’s not something in his make-up. And following that, it’s clear that she no longer makes him vulnerable to physical harm, indicating that he really does believe what he’s saying. For the rest of Season 5B, Lucifer then has to contend with his own feelings about whether or not he’s capable of love, specifically for Chloe.

In the end, Lucifer’s understanding of God’s statement is certainly informed by his own feelings of abandonment when it comes to God. However, the entire conversation makes clear that, while God doesn’t lie, he doesn’t necessarily always say the truth. Instead, God gives evasive answers that leave a lot up to interpretation. So technically Lucifer is correct. Since God doesn’t really answer direct questions, he is not ever technically lying. That being said, God does prove Lucifer’s interpretation incorrect in Season 5B when he confirms that he does, in fact, love his sons.

Lucifer stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Det. Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Det. Dan Espinoza, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen Smith and Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez. Season 5B is now on Netflix.
