AMC, Regal and Cinemark Remove Mask Requirement for Vaccinated Moviegoers

Following the new CDC guidelines, America’s three largest theater chains — AMC, Regal and Cinemark — are no longer requiring vaccinated moviegoers to wear masks.

Mask-wearing for vaccinated attendees at the major multiplex chains is now purely optional except when mandated by state or local laws. Unvaccinated attendees are still “strongly encouraged” to wear masks at these theaters, though they’re allowed to take them off for eating or drinking. It is unclear if or how rules for unvaccinated moviegoers will be enforced. AMC, Regal and Cinemark employees are still required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

This policy is a change from AMC Theatres’ initial response to the CDC easing mask restrictions, which stated “Masks Required For Everyone, Regardless of vaccination status or local guidelines.” The change comes about as COVID-19 cases continue to drop across the United States.

It should be noted that other coronavirus safety regulations, such as socially distanced seating, limited screening capacities and enhanced theater cleaning techniques, are still in full effect.

In June 2020, when AMC theaters were beginning to reopen, CEO Adam Aaron said the company would not require masks because it “did not want to be drawn into a political controversy.” This statement itself became controversial, and AMC changed its policy to require masks.
