Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Star Breaks Down the Super-Secretive Audition Process

Auditioning for the Star Wars sequel trilogy was an immensely secretive process, according to Kelly Marie Tran.

While discussing the Blu-Ray release of Raya and the Last Dragon with Collider, Tran recalled auditioning for the role of Rose Tico in The Last Jedi. “I remember getting an email, just like you normally would for an audition, but the email said the project was ‘The Untitled Rian Johnson Project,’ which after a little bit of light Googling, it was pretty clear that he was doing Episode 8,” Tran said.

The secrecy even extended to the character description for Rose, which Tran described as “’20s, female, character-y,’ — and that was it. You didn’t really know anything about it. So yeah, it was wild. I will say, the best thing that I did was probably just try as much as possible to be present in the moment and pay attention to what the scene was about, as opposed to trying to act a genre or play to a specific universe if that makes sense.”

Tran, who played Rose in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, previously discussed the career trajectory which led her from the Star Wars sequels to Raya and the Last Dragon, calling it “miraculous.” “I just want people to know and believe that you might go through certain times in your life that are hard and difficult, but coming out on the other side of that and having your support group and being with people who believe in you, there’s nothing like it in the entire world,” she explained. “And I think for me, moving from the Star Wars experiences to then going to Raya has been absolutely miraculous.”

Directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada from a script by Adele Lim and Qui Nguyen, Raya and the Last Dragon stars Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, Benedict Wong, Izaac Wang, Thalia Tran, Alan Tudyk, Lucille Soong, Patti Harrison and Ross Butler. The film is now available on Digital HD, 4K UHD and Blu-ray.
