Jason Derulo to Launch a Dystopian Sci-Fi Graphic Novel | CBR

Z2 Comics is bringing Jason Derulo’s passion project to life.

The publisher will launch the original graphic novel Uzo in the fall. Uzo, written by Anthony Piper (Trill League) and illustrated by Eric Koda (Generation X), is based on an original idea by Derulo. The series focuses on the titular warrior Uzo, who fights to protect his village after a cataclysmic event plunges the planet into a new ice age.

“I’ve been working on bringing Uzo to life for years. From writing scripts to skits on TikTok. So blessed to have worked with a dream team of creators to bring the best version of ‘Uzo’ to you,” Derulo said in a statement.

“When I spoke to Jason about his idea, I was excited by his vision to turn his Uzo character into a hero—but even more excited that he was open to exploring dark and emotional themes that I felt were pertinent to the times we live in,” Piper added. “We’re creating something unprecedented for a black hero. Something that speaks on the responsibility that comes with manhood and being a protector, of not only family, but the planet itself. Plus, I know with art by the talented Eric Koda, this story is going to be a visual treat for the reader.”

“This is an epic story with some real powerhouses behind it! I am excited to help bring this world to life,” Koda added.

Z2 Comics is well known for its collaboration with musical artists, bringing their ideas to life in the form of graphic novels. Artists the publishers have collaborated with include Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman and Machine Gun Kelly. In addition to the standard edition hardcover, Uzo will also have “deluxe” and “platinum” editions.

Jason Derulo’s Uzo is currently available to pre-order at Z2 Comics and will go on sale on Oct. 31, 2021.
