A Fan-Favorite Green Lantern Is About to Join the Sinestro Corps

Images for Green Lantern 2021 Annual reveal that the Sinestro Corps has potentially gained a new member: Sector 2814 Lantern Jessica Cruz.

The comic’s cover preview shows Cruz in a Sinestro Corps uniform aiming her ring over Hal Jordan’s body, while Sinestro and longtime Corps acolyte Lyssa Drak observe. Sinestro celebrates this confrontation by telling the former Green Lantern “Welcome to the Sinestro Corps, Jessica Cruz.” A variant cover, by comparison, features a solo image of Cruz in her new costume and power ring.

  • Once an agoraphobic scared to even leave her room, Jessica Cruz overcame her fear to become a Green Lantern and face the darkest and deadliest threats in the universe. But now, Jessica’s gone from overcoming fear to using it as a weapon. When Yellow Lanterns attacked the Green Lantern Sector House she took refuge in when the Central Power battery was destroyed, Jessica turned the tables on them, giving them something to be afraid of, as she beat them one-by-one. But now that she’s been offered a place in the Sinestro Corps, will she accept?

Details for Green Lantern 2021 Annual‘s plot reference Cruz being asked to join the rival Corps after counterattacking them so effectively that she manages to terrify the aggressors. Other instances of Lanterns or DC characters joining some of the more morally ambiguous Lantern Corps include Guy Gardner and Supergirl becoming Red Lanterns, and Sinestro’s daughter Soranik Natu gradually switching her alliances from Green to Yellow.

Jessica Cruz was introduced in Justice League #30 as a fearful recluse who, traumatized by witnessing her friends’ murders, became the next host of the Ring of Volthoom formally worn by Crime Syndicate member Power Ring. However, after sacrificing herself to help the Justice League stop the Black Racer, Cruz managed to destroy Volthoom and be deemed worthy by a Green Lantern ring. In addition to serving with the Corps, Cruz regularly partners with fellow Earth Lantern Simon Baz on missions and is an official member of the Justice League. She has since been adapted for animated programs like DC Superhero Girls and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, with the character set to appear in HBO Max’s Green Lantern show.

Created by Ryan Cady and Sami Basri, Green Lantern 2021 Annual will release on Aug. 31.
