WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #1 by Brandon Easton, Fico Ossio, Rico Renzi, Rob Leigh
Mister Miracle and Barda are one of the DC Universe’s most foundational romances, and their bond is a major element of both characters. Even when both heroes have served on the Justice League, their long-standing marriage has been one of their defining traits. There have been some versions of the characters who’ve even expanded their family with children, with the latest seemingly becoming a new villain for the inheritor of one of their major roles.
In Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #1, N’Vir Free steps forward to proclaim herself as the true inheritor to the Mister Miracle name.

Shilo Norman has become the modern Mister Miracle, quickly transforming into a massive celebrity as an escape artist. Bringing the identity back into the public eye, Shilo has become a major draw — which enrages an unseen force that is infuriated he’s using a Mother Box to “entertain barely sentient primates.” While Shilo tries to juggle the realities of being a masked hero, a massive celebrity and a Black man in tumultuous times, a mysterious player moves behind the and publicly accuses him of being a thief and a fraud on live television, and arranging for the bank to foreclose on his condo.
Following a date that spirals out of control, Shilo finds himself targeted by Boom Tubes directed as energy blasts, barely evading them long enough to suit up and return to his condo, which has been ransacked and thrashed. He’s able to lift up his shields just in time to reflect a blast from the instigator — who is revealed to be N’Vir Free, the apparent daughter of Scott and Barda Free. This is a major development for the New Gods of the Infinite Frontier era, who’ve been largely absent from the core DC Universe. Scott Free and his true love Barda are two of the most important figures in the Fourth World Saga.
The son of Highfather of New Genesis, Scott was trapped on Apokolips as part of the Pact with Darkseid to try and ensure peace between the two worlds. Despite the tortures of the world, Scott was able to overcome the pain and eventually escape, donning the mantle of Mister Miracle, the universe’s greatest escape artist. Along the way, he was able to convince Barda, a promising and skilled warrior of Apokolips, to abandon her darker ways and join him, with the pair falling in love and even getting married. The couple became members of the Post-Crisis Justice League, and have been allies in the post-Flashpoint DC Universe, surviving on Earth-2 for a time and having their loyalties tested during the events of “The Darkseid War.”
The pair recently appeared in Mister Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, which focused on their relationship and ultimately their apparent decision to leave the DC Universe behind so they could raise a family in relative peace, including their young son Jacob and his unborn sister. However, they also appeared in wide-line events like “Drowned Earth” and Dark Nights: Death Metal, suggesting at least versions of them were still in the core DC Universe. The full explanation of their apparent child was teased to come later in future issues of Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom, but her name and design harken back to the fiery pits of Apokolips, suggesting a dark origin for the woman claiming to be their child.
N’Vir size indicates that she may indeed be truly the child of Barda, which would also suggest her massive strength. Her violent demeanor also hints that she might be a truly fearsome force with some dark origins, further suggesting she may be a child of theirs that was raised on Apokolips. However, it’s not clear what her true connection to the two Justice League veterans are or what’s driven her to be this destructive.
