High School Musical: The Series Sets Up Lily as Its First Villain

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2, Episode 2, “Typecasting,” streaming now on Disney+.

With the excitement of the Spring musical in the air, everyone in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is creating for the Beauty and the Beast auditions, but one character is not who they appear. Being all about how the case came together, Season 1 of the show didn’t have a true villain. Season 2, however, has a whole new dynamic, and it’s brought a new adversary with it.

As the group of thespians is sitting around the lunch table, a new character makes her first appearance. Lily (Olivia Rose Keegan) is a freshman at East High, and she seemingly idolizes the theater students. She says that their performance of High School Musical last semester has inspired her to try out for Beauty and the Beast. Her peppy personality and high energy make it seem like she will fit in really well with the rest of the students, so before she leaves, they all wish her well at the auditions later that day.

Auditions for the show comprised of two different parts: a group number and individual performances. First, the hopeful cast members all participate in a group number of the classic Disney anthem, “Belle.” They all trade off parts in a montage so that everyone has a chance to sing different parts, which gives them all a chance to warm up their voices and allows Miss Jen to see how people might fit into various roles.

After the performance, however, Lily comes up to talk to Gina in the hallway before the individual auditions start and reveals her true colors. She starts by complimenting Gina, but in the process, she insults everyone else, saying that she and Gina are the only two with any talent. Apparently, when Lily said that she didn’t have any theater experience earlier in the episode, she only meant that she had never performed with amateur high schoolers before. Gina is quick to jump to the defense of her friends, but Lily says, “I’m sorry, I thought this was an audition, not a friendship circle.”

With Nini at the Youth Actors’ Conservatory, the part of Bell is up for grabs. Gina and Ashlyn have strong performances and position themselves nicely for the lead, but Lily seems like she is on a different level. However, just when it seems like she has the lead role all wrapped up, when the cast list is revealed, there is a surprise — Ashlyn is going to play Belle.

As a shocked Lily walks away from the cast list, Miss Jen sees her and explains. She says that Lily has an amazing voice, but she didn’t like her attitude. When one of the students was auditioning with a tap dance and fell, Lily laughed at him and Miss Jen took note of it. Miss Jen clearly won’t let someone like Lily ruin the comradery between friends in her drama department.

After being denied the lead (and maybe a part altogether), Lily makes a phone call to the North High drama department. If Miss Jen will not let her perform at East High, she will transfer to the rival school in order to do everything in her power to prove that she is better than everyone else. She is out for revenge against Miss Jen, and the best way to get that is by getting help from her nemesis, Zac Roy.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series starts Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Kate Reinders, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie A. Rodriguez, Mark St. Cyr, Joe Serafini, Derek Hough, Roman Banks, Olivia Rose Keegan, Andrew Barth Feldman and Asher Angel. New episodes premiere Fridays on Disney+.
