It’s very rare for a franchise to connect with audiences in the kind of way that’s happened with Pokémon. Pokémon has come a long way since its humble origins as a handheld video game and it’s steadily grown into an all-encompassing franchise where its anime and spin-off titles garner just as much acclaim. Pokémon continues to grow and change, which has resulted in some very unique Pokémon designs over the years.
There are many different types of Pokémon, but Grass-Type creatures have been around from the very start of the series. The majority of Grass-Type Pokémon find inspiration from actual plants and wildlife, but there is also a small selection that takes a different direction with their looks.
10 Celebi Is A Mythical Pokémon That Expresses Its Grass Side In Other Ways
Celebi is a very notable Pokémon in the sense that it’s an important Mythical Pokémon from Generation II that plays a major role in Pokémon 4Ever. Celebi can travel through time and its most important capabilities lean more into the Pokémon’s Psychic-Type half rather than its Grass-Type side. Celebi has an important connection to the forest, but other than that and the Pokémon’s green color, it really doesn’t seem like a Grass-Type, let alone one that resembles an actual plant. Celebi might camouflage well in a forest, but no one is going to confuse the Pokémon for actual plant life.
9 Treecko And Its Evolutionary Line Look More Like Animals Than Plants
Pokémon has always had amazing Starter Pokémon. Generation III’s Hoenn region brings forward Treecko as its Grass-Type representative. Treecko resembles a reptile that would seamlessly blend in with trees and a forest setting. Treecko’s evolved forms, Grovyle and Sceptile, both feature a little more plant-like flair, but they come across more like means of camouflage and evolutionary advancements rather than actually looking like a plant. Strategically placed leaves aren’t enough to draw away from the rest of its design.
8 Calyrex Is A Regal Pokémon That Looks Like A Ruler, Not A Plant
Some of the later Pokémon titles have debuted creatures with important backstories and Calyrex is said to have ruled over the Galar region back during ancient times. This regal Pokémon is one of the more powerful new Pokémon to come around, but it’s incredibly hard to tell that this Pokémon has a Grass-Type component.
Calyrex is both a Grass- and Psychic-Type, but its demeanor makes it seem more like an Ice- or Dark-Type Pokémon. None of Calyrex’s traits make it come across as a plant, especially when it’s in its Ice and Shadow Rider forms.
7 Abomasnow Accentuates Its Ice Side And Suppresses Its Grass Roots
Abomasnow is a behemoth from out of Generation IV that’s quite hard to confuse for a plant. The Grass- and Ice-Type’s previous form, Snover, has a few plant-like traits, but they become buried in Abomasnow as the Ice portion of the Pokémon becomes quite overbearing. Abomasnow is even known for its ability to create blizzards, which connects further to his Ice-Type’s side. Abomasnow’s odd connection to nature is that it only appears during the life cycle of when snow flowers are in bloom. However, it doesn’t resemble one itself.
6 Mow Rotom Is Actually A Menace To Plants Everywhere
This may feel like a bit of a cheat, but Mow Rotom is legitimately a Grass-Type Pokémon so this odd variation on the eclectic Pokémon should still qualify. Rotom is a ghost that can possess certain pieces of electrical equipment, such as a lawnmower. This possession results in a Grass- and Electric-Type take on Rotom, but it still looks like an exaggerated version of Rotom. This Grass-Type technicality is actually a little morbid since Mow Rotom cuts grass and actively destroys plants, rather than become one itself.
5 Serperior Has A Clear Animal Resemblance That Strays Away From Foliage
Snivy is a Starter Pokémon from Generation V’s Unova region that has a lot of personality thanks to its prominent role in the anime series. Snivy’s snippy attitude makes its eventual transformation into Serperior come as an even greater shock since the Grass-Type Pokémon exudes grace and elegance.
Like Serperior’s name implies, the Pokémon resembles a serpent more than anything else. There are some minor stylistic flairs that bring plants to mind, but Snivy’s evolved forms move further away from a plant aesthetic and definitely embrace more of an animalistic design.
4 Shiftry’s Treetop Environment Make It Seem Like More Of A Plant Than It Is
Shiftry is the final form of Generation III’s Seedot and Nuzleaf, which evolves after it gets exposed to the Leaf Stone. Shiftry is an enigmatic fighter that’s both a Grass- and Dark-Type. Shiftry’s previous forms have prominent plant features, but Shiftry’s lead appendages almost feel more like deceptive camouflage. Shiftry lives at the top of trees, so it makes sense that this detail is just to help it better blend into its surroundings. The rest of the creature is unique enough to stand out as something that’s distinctly not a plant.
3 Deerling Isn’t A Plant Even Though It Changes With The Seasons
Deerling is a bit of a clever bait and switch when it comes to Grass-Type Pokémon. Deerling is known as the Season Pokémon for the sole reason that the Pokémon changes colors in accordance with the seasons. This is a trait that’s very akin to plants and nature, but the only plant features on Deerling are reduced to cute flower-like tufts of hair. Deerling incorporates a lot of plant concepts, but it’s clearly a deer and that’s the most prominent thing about this Pokémon. The seasonal idea could go much further to accentuate its Grass-Type nature.
2 Chesnaught Gets Very Removed From Its Grass-Type Origins
It’s always interesting to see how the final evolved form of Starter Pokémon can sometimes be radically different from where that Pokémon started. Chespin is the Grass-Type Starter for Generation VI’s Kalos region and its final form, Chesnaught, is a very dangerous Pokémon. Chesnaught is also a Fighting-Type Pokémon and this side of the creature certainly overpowers the Grass-Type traits that were prominent in Chespin. Chesnaught has some aesthetic plant touches, but it resembles more of a mammal that’s covered in fur as opposed to leaves or moss.
1 It’s Hard To Tell That Zarude Evan Has Any Grass-Type In It At All
Zarude is a Pokémon that’s still largely a mystery and it’s the focal point of the most recent Pokémon movie, Coco. Zarude fits into a bit of a Tarzan narrative as the Pokémon raises an orphaned child and remains immersed in nature. Zarude is a Grass- and Dark-Type, but it bears an intimidating appearance and clearly is modeled after a baboon. There are actually very few Grass-Type signifiers on Zarude at all. If the Pokémon’s story wasn’t so connected to nature, one would be hard-pressed to figure out that Zarude was a Grass-Type Pokémon at all.
