One Piece: 5 Zanpakutō That Perfectly Counter Mihawk (& 5 He Can Handle)

One Piece has been around for more than two decades, and over the course of its run, it has introduced fans to hundreds of characters. The majority of these characters are pirates who possess some kind of Devil Fruit power or Haki, and many of them happen to be swordsmen. Dracule Mihawk is considered to be the strongest swordsman in the world, and that is because he has mastered every known bladed weapon.

Bleach is another popular series, and it mainly focuses on Soul Reapers who battle evil spirits with unique swords called Zanpakutō. Every Zanpakutō has a transformation called a Shikai, and they usually come with a special ability. Some Zanpakutō also possess a Bankai transformation, and some of their abilities are quite overpowered. Mihawk can definitely take on some of these Zanpakutō, but there are some that are actually capable of countering his skill.

10 Perfectly Counters: Even Mihawk Cannot Stop Ryūjin Jakka’s Flames

Ryujin Jakka On Fire

Ryūjin Jakka is arguably the strongest Kido-type Zanpakutō in Bleach, and it is wielded by Captain-Commander Yamamoto. When its Shikai is activated, Ryūjin Jakka’s blade is engulfed in flames that are hot enough to incinerate anything in its path.

Its Bankai coats the sword and Yamamoto in flames that burn at around 15,000,000 degrees, and this means that Mihawk’s body would burn up if he attempted a close-ranged attack. Even if his body is somehow able to withstand that heat, his swords wouldn’t, in fact, they’d all melt.

9 Can Handle: Mihawk Can Simply Cut Through Tengumaru

Tengumaru Shikai

Before becoming a Visored, Love Aikawa was the Captain of Squad 8, which is why he has his own Zanpakutō named Tengumaru. When he activates Tengumaru’s Shikai, the sword transforms into a massive two-handed war club that looks sort of like a cactus.

After being spun around a bit, Tengumaru will ignite, and when Love aims it downwards, it is capable of shooting a large fireball at his opponent. Mihawk is more than capable of slicing through the fireball, and based on his physical strength, he should be able to smash the Shikai to pieces.

8 Perfectly Counters: Ashisogi Jizō’s Poison Would Be Too Much To Handle

The Different Forms Of Ashisogi Jizo

Mayuri Kurotsuchi is one of the least sympathetic characters in the series, but no one can deny the fact that the Squad 12 Captain is very versatile in battle. His sword’s name is Ashisogi Jizō, and when he activates its Shikai, it takes the form of a strange trident. If Mihawk was cut by this blade, the brain signals that govern his movement would be severed, leaving him paralyzed.

When Bankai is activated, Ashisogi Jizō transforms into a monstrous creature with a large baby head and caterpillar-like body. Mihawk might be able to deal with all the retractable blades that emerge from its chest, but he wouldn’t be able to handle the poisonous gas that continuously pours from the baby’s mouth.

7 Can Handle: Kazeshini Is Just A Pair Of Scythe Blades Connected With A Long Chain

Hisagi Releasing Kazeshini For The First Time

Shuhei Hisagi is the lieutenant of Squad 9, and his Kazeshini happens to be one of the best melee-type Zanpakutō in the series. When its Shikai is activated, Kazeshini splits into two double-sided sickle blades that are connected through a long chain.

When Hisagi attacks, he does so from long range, and he uses the chain to direct the sickles, thus making his attacks unpredictable. Kazeshini may make Hisagi one of the best scythe users in anime, but Mihawk’s keen eyesight will allow him to intercept every attack the lieutenant throws at him. Mihawk’s also more than capable of snapping Kazeshini’s blades and chain.

6 Perfectly Counters: Kira’s Wabisuke Would Weigh Down His Swords

Wabisuke Weighing Down An Arrancar

Bleach has several characters who didn’t get a chance to have a big impact on the series, and Kira is arguably one of those characters, which is unfortunate since his Zanpakutō’s ability is quite useful. When its Shikai is activated, Wabisuke slightly extends, and its tip curves to form a square-shaped end that is perfect for executions.

Wabisuke doubles the weight of anything it hits, and if it hits the same thing multiple times, its new weight will continue to double. Mihawk may be strong, but even he can’t lift a sword if it weighs thousands of pounds.

5 Can Handle: Haguro Tonbo Is Just A Very Long Polearm

Lisa Using Haguro Tonbo Against Harribel

Lisa is another Soul Reaper who became a Visored, and her Zanpakutō likely wouldn’t cause Mihawk any kind of trouble. Her sword’s name is Haguro Tonbo, and when she activates its Shikai, it transforms into a massive polearm with a giant spade-like blade at the end.

Haguro Tonbo allows Lisa to unleash a barrage of piercing attacks that Mihawk would be able to block pretty easily. He would also be able to break the Shikai in half with a well-placed Haki-infused sword strike.

4 Perfectly Counters: Sakanade Would Ruin Mihawk’s Coordination

Shinji Using Sakanade On Aizen

Shinji Hirako was the leader of the Visoreds, and he is one of many characters who decided to hide their true power until the last minute. Hirako’s sword is named Sakanade, and when its Shikai is activated, it gains a slim, razor-sharp edge, while its pommel becomes a large ring that rotates around Shinji’s hand.

Sakanade creates a pink mist when it rotates, and when the target smells it, they fall victim to an optical illusion. This illusion reverses everything, meaning that if Mihawk swings upwards, he’s actually swinging downwards, and if he moves backward, he’s actually going forward. Even Mihawk can’t fight properly if his movements are impaired to such a degree.

3 Can Handle: Tobiume’s Fireballs Would Just Get Swatted Away

Tobiume Shikai

Momo Hinamori suffered a great deal of emotional trauma when Aizen betrayed Soul Society, and that is just one of the ways his betrayal impacted the series. When she activates Tobiume’s Shikai, the sword becomes a double-edged blade with three jutting prongs.

Tobiume’s special ability allows Momo to release fireballs that explode when they hit a target. Mihawk is skilled enough to cut right through these fireballs, and given Momo’s fragile state of mind, he’ll probably be able to knock the Zanpakutō right out of her hand.

2 Perfectly Counters: Tosen’s Suzumushi Would Eliminate Mihawk’s Keen Eyesight

Tosen Using His Bankai On Kenpachi

Tosen may be blind, but he is still a master swordsman with a terrifying Zanpakutō. Suzumushi’s Shikai produces a high-pitched tone that overloads the target’s sense of hearing to such a degree that they end up losing consciousness. Mihawk will be able to hear this tone, so it will definitely affect him.

Even if Mihawk was able to power through Suzumushi’s Shikai, he would never be able to deal with its Bankai. When activated, Suzumushi creates a dome that would eliminate all of Mihawk’s senses except his sense of touch. Mihawk may be the greatest swordsman in One Piece, but even he needs to be able to see and hear his opponent in order to defend himself.

1 Can Handle: Gegetsuburi Is Arguably One Of The Weakest Zanpakutō

Omaeda In The Fake Katakura Town Arc

Marechiyo Ōmaeda is the lieutenant of Squad 2, as well as the Corps Commander of Soul Society’s Stealth Force, but he wields what may be the weakest Zanpakutō in the series. The Zanpakutō is named Gegetsuburi, and when its Shikai is activated, it transforms into a large spiked ball that is attached to a chain.

Gegetsuburi does not have any special abilities, and Ōmaeda simply flings it at his enemies. Mihawk can easily evade such simplistic attacks, and if Ichigo Kurosaki was able to smash it with a single punch, Mihawk can do the same with a Haki-infused slash.
