WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Wonder Girl #1 by Joelle Jones, Jordie Bellaire, Clayton Cowles, on sale now.
The beginning of Yara Flor’s journey to becoming the next Wonder Woman has begun and she’s already made a new friend along the way. During the bus ride to her hotel, Yara engaged in a conversation with her driver. His name was João and he surmised that Yara was different from the other tourists, based on her age and something else he has yet to reveal.
The driver gained even more respect for Yara when she risked her life to save people caught in a traffic accident. This may seem like a casual meeting at first sight, but in actuality it bears striking similarities to Princess Diana’s meeting with the man who became her first love interest, indicating that João could end up becoming Yara’s very own version of Steve Trevor.

Even though Yara’s story will more than likely not just be a carbon copy of Diana’s, there are already a few reasons to suspect that João could fill a role similar to Steve. Aside from the fact that he’s a regular, non-superpowered man, there is already the hint of chemistry between the two as they bond during their first interaction. And João admitting that Yara was distracting is almost certainly a hint of romantic attraction, at least on his part. Yara just seems happy to have made a friend who thinks that her running towards a burning car was brave.
But there is another reason to consider João as Yara’s version of Steve Trevor. When Diana first left Themyscira, she knew absolutely nothing about the outside world. That was the majority of Steve’s job; to be her guide to this new and exciting land. João is no soldier, but he is literally a guide, being the driver for the heritage tour that Yara signed up for. She’s here to experience the culture that she never knew, but João grew up with it and is familiar enough with it to give tours to outsiders. He could very well be the key to Yara’s initial understanding of her greater destiny.
Given the fact that João is the main driver to ferry Yara’s tour group around, it is highly likely that he’ll have more of a presence in her life as Yara begins to explore her homeland. Hopefully he becomes a companion to Yara, because the only other character who had enough of a presence in the issue to be of any notice was a youtuber named Kevin who was less than respectful to Yara during the tour.
Whereas João is a native to the country, Kevin is more or less a youtuber who is only there to earn views and subscribers, turning what should have been a wonderful moment of personal reflection in a beautiful natural environment into a media joke. He even tried to rope Yara into it, displaying no real respect for the land or the people actually trying to appreciate it. This is a stark contrast to João who not only has an understanding of this part of the world, but loves it enough to share with others in effort to expand their horizons, much like Trevor did with Diana. With his similarities to one of the most important people in Princess Diana’s life, odds are that João will be making more appearances in the future.
