The Batman: Official Merch Confirms the Riddler’s Controversial Redesign

Official merchandise for The Batman has confirmed The Riddler’s somewhat controversial new look in the DC film.

Twitter user Mikhail Villarreal posted an image of The Batman‘s official 2022 calendar that features brand-new artwork for the movie. Among the characters depicted are Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader, Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, complete with the full-face mask, goggles and green jacket he wore in The Batman‘s teaser trailer. This is a dramatic change from the super-villain’s traditional attire, which usually includes a domino mask and a bright green outfit, be it a business suit or the skintight one covered in black question marks that Jim Carrey wore as The Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever.

Dano’s Riddler has already been compared to Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight (2008), in terms of his unrefined costume. Much like the latter, he also seems to be interested in attacking Batman’s philosophy and ideals, exposing the hypocrisy of Gotham City’s elite in the process. The Batman teaser trailer hints as much when it opens on a grisly murder scene left behind by The Riddler, his victim’s face covered in duct tape with a messaged scribbled on it in red marker: “No more lies.”

In May 2020, Dano praised The Batman co-writer/director Matt Reeves, saying that his script for the film is “potentially really powerful.” He went on to tease The Riddler’s larger than life presence in the movie. “There’s something fun there in my character and in all the characters. It’s the kind of movie that we’re just desperate to share on the big screen in a big way,” Dano added.

The Batman has been described as a neo-noir crime thriller focused on a relatively younger Bruce Wayne who’s only in his second year of fighting crime as Batman. While it’s long been rumored the film would exist separately from the main DC Extended Universe, it was recently reported the movie may even take place on DC’s Earth-2.

Directed by Matt Reeves and written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson. The film arrives in theaters March 4, 2022.
