Since its debut, Bitter Root has incorporated various elements of Black culture into its narrative. This will continue with Bitter Root #14, with a special commemorative cover that honors the holiday of Juneteenth.
The cover is illustrated by Bitter Root co-creator Sanford Greene and features the Juneteenth flag on display. Taking place on June 19, Juneteeth celebrates the official emancipation of slaves in the United States. Though Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation nearly two years earlier, it wasn’t until Juneteenth when Union General Gordon Granger officially announced the end of slavery in Texas.
“Team Bitter Root has always been committed to acknowledging a very rich history within the work we do, and this commemorative Juneteenth cover is our way of celebrating an occasion that speaks to the heart and soul of what this series is about and the culture we honor,” Bitter Root writer and co-creator David F. Walker said in a statement.
Created by Walker, Green and Chuck Brown, Bitter Root chronicles the adventures of the Sangerye family as they hunt and slay monsters that feed on the prejudices of mankind. A film adaptation of Bitter Root is in the works at Legendary, with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler producing and Watchmen star Regina King in the director’s chair; Bryan Edward Hill (Batman and the Outsiders) will pen the script.
Bitter Root #14, by David F. Walker, Chuck Brown, Sanford Greene Sofie Dodgson and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, goes on sale on June 23 from Image Comics.
