In the last decade, film and television audiences have been treated to a wide variety of streaming services offering everything from old classics to critically-acclaimed original content. Out of the dozens of services available across the globe, only a few giants reign supreme.
A new study conducted by ElectricalDirect found the popular streaming services for each country and region, with Netflix unsurprisingly dominating overall by being the number one service in 94 countries, followed by Amazon Prime Video in 11 countries and the Russian service Ivi in 4 countries.
The study utilized the number of searches on Google, with Netflix getting 1.7 billion search hits over the past year, Amazon Prime Video getting 661 million and Ivi getting 7.3 million. Disney+’s ranked as the fifth most popular streaming service, with just 227 million searches over the last year. It should be noted that the service only completed its global launch toward the end of 2020.
Netflix has presented audiences with original content such as Tiger King, which saw widespread popularity at the beginning of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic; Bridgerton, based on the popular novel series; and the award-winning miniseries, The Queen’s Gambit.
