Spiral: From the Book of Saw Opens to Lackluster Box Office Numbers

Spiral: From the Book of Saw debuted in domestic movie theaters over the weekend but didn’t scare up truly exceptional box office numbers.

According to Deadline, Spiral: From the Book of Saw opened to $8.7 million, considerably behind pre-release expectations for a $10-15 million opening and the lowest debut for any film in the Saw franchise. That’s down 38 percent from the $14.1 million opening weekend of Saw VI, which previously had the lowest opening in the series. Spiral’s bow is also down 45 percent from the $16.6 million bow of its predecessor, Jigsaw.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw did score the third-biggest domestic opening weekend for an R-rated title since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began. Only Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train had better bows in that timeframe. Among all theatrical releases that have debuted in the wake of the pandemic, Spiral had the eighth-biggest bow, coming in behind other titles like The Croods: A New Age but narrowly edging out the $8.6 million debut of Raya and the Last Dragon.

11 percent of Spiral’s opening weekend came from IMAX screenings while 56 percent of its opening weekend was male. The film’s most successful screenings were on the East Coast while 58 percent of its audience was over the age of 25. Meanwhile, audiences gave Spiral a B- CinemaScore, slightly down from the B CinemaScore that Jigsaw garnered.

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, Spiral: From the Book of Saw stars Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols and Zoie Palmer. It is now playing in theaters.
