Venom 2: Carnage Is Already More Powerful Than Its Creator | CBR

In Venom, one of the biggest issues that potential hosts had when bonding with a symbiote was found during the first phase. Hosts who weren’t compatible with the symbiote never survived the bonding process. However, those that did could learn their secrets and develop a powerful relationship. Through Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), viewers could see how a symbiotic relationship can build over time and create the lethal protector known as Venom. But in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) may have Eddie beat in terms of how fast he controlled his symbiote.

In the comics, the Carnage symbiote was an offspring of Venom and loved to murder and terrorize innocents just as much as his host. When the two bonded, they unleashed terror the likes of which had never been seen. Their bond played a large part in their strength, and since the two entities always saw eye to eye, they bypassed having to learn about each other like Venom and Eddie did when they first met.

Scenes in the Venom 2 trailer showcase just how powerful Carnage will be compared to Venom due to their stronger connection. Right before his reveal, Carnage is shown using his massive tendrils to grab a helicopter and bring it crashing to the ground. The most impressive part of the feat was the size of his tendrils, which resembled a tree trunk and was much larger than the ones Venom uses.

Another aspect of the comics that the film aims to bring to life is Carnage’s ability to rearrange his molecules into weapons. Similar to Riot in the first film, Carnage can create any weapon he imagines. And with the mind of a serial killer working with the symbiote, his affinity for sharp objects has taken on new life. In fact, in his debut shot, Carnage uses his tendrils to create knives as he screams at his enemies.

Carnage in Venom: Let There Be Carnage

While the first look at Carnage is reminiscent of his earlier appearances, nothing compares to the level of control displayed in the trailer’s final shot. Carnage rises into the frame, bulkier and with multiple arms that feature either sharp fingers or bladed weapons in front of a stained glass window. His display of power showed that Carnage and Cletus have already reached a symbiosis so perfect that they can expand their arsenal in a way Venom never imagined.

Venom and Eddie Brock represent the ideal relationship between a symbiote and its host. The two of them have a system that makes sure no side has too much control. Cletus Kasady and Carnage don’t have that system, mostly because they only want to kill and torture. So, when it comes down to a battle of control, Carnage appears to have the upper hand, and that may force Eddie and Venom to push themselves and their abilities to new heights.

Directed by Andy Serkis, Venom: Let There Be Carnage stars Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham, Sean Delaney and Larry Olubamiwo. The film arrives in theaters Sept. 24.
