WARNING: This article contains spoilers for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episode 2, “Meat: The Legends,” which aired Sunday on the CW.
With Sara Lance still lost in space, the Legends of Tomorrow have a bigger fish to fry in the form of alien prisoners spread throughout the timeline. After Captain Lance’s first attempt to return backfired, causing said time-displaced aliens, she must travel the cosmos with Gary to find a new way back to the Waverider. Meanwhile, on the ship, the team is battling internal struggles with new recruit Spooner finding her footing as a Legend and sibling rivalry with the Tarazis regarding the use of their family heirloom.
The episode opens up with the Legends trying to get a handle on the situation as alien pods vanish through the time stream, and the ship gets hit by Kayla, Gary’s ex-fiancée. Her splattered remains stick to the windshield, so Mick wipes her off, angering Ava as she’d hoped the alien could be a lead to Sara. However, the team confirms that the alien is dead and not have been any help. Just as the aliens spread across time, Gideon finds a lead; October 10th, 1955, San Bernardino, home of the fast-food chains. An anomaly at Big Bang Burger appears to be the catalyst for the lead. The entire population of the town was killed overnight in an event dubbed “The Massacre on Main Street.” With the location in place, the team jets off to try to prevent the massacre. Before setting off, Behrad informs Spooner that there is no device in her brain to be removed, meaning that Gideon cannot help her. But Ava promises that once Sara is in their hands, Spooner will be dropped off at whatever location she desires.
As they land in 1955, the Legends struggle to find their alien but narrow it down to a creature with a love of meat. They split up. Nate and the Tarazis get jobs at Big Bang Burger, and the rest follow up on police calls to several meat plants. Meanwhile, out in space, Sara and Gary crash-land on an unknown planet. Gary reveals that this is the planet of his employer who assigned him and Kayla with the task of finding the universe’s most powerful creatures. Disoriented but still motivated, Sara tries to figure out a way back until she sees a dog on the outside, giving her a sign that the air is breathable to humans, and so she ventures off. On the surface, Sara learns more about Gary’s alien origins and tries to understand why she was chosen to be kidnapped. They follow the dog in hopes of finding answers and run into Amelia Earhart. Unfortunately for them, Amelia is an alien and attacks Sara, causing her to lose conscience as she and Gary are swarmed by unknown beings.
Back on Earth, Behrad, Zari and Nate get hired at Big Bang. Behrad is excited to try out his burger flipping skills again, Nate puts on rollerblades and Zari struggles to deal with her new situation. The rest of the team make it to a butcher shop where they find the mascot for Big Bang Burger digging through raw meat. They take him to the med bay to learn more but scans fail to show alien biology. Constantine tries magic to dispel the mascot of any foreign materials, which makes him vomit out Big Bang Burger’s secret sauce.
Back at the burger shop, Behrad tries to teach Zari about the zen state needed to be a totem bearer, but Zari perceives it as jealousy from Behrad, as his stint at a burger shop was the only time he was allowed to be himself and not Dragon Girl’s brother. Ava shares the revelation and asks them to bring the sauce back to the ship. To save the town, they kick out all the customers, although it angers Big Bang’s owner who is in disbelief over their attempts to explain the situation until the waitress emerges eating raw meat.
The owner divulges that his wife, Ronda, makes the sauce which gives the team their next lead. Ronda is unhelpful until Ava notices a mysterious sludge dropping from the air vent. Following her hunch, she makes her way to the attic just as John and Spooner find the alien pod in the garage. Before they can warn Ava, she is knocked out by Ronda who comforts an alien cocoon that is leaking the sauce. She reveals that she discovered the alien a week prior and has been knowingly serving the goo because it is saving the family business and her marriage. Spooner rushes in with the save and figures out that the alien is fattening up the town to feed on them. Before any action can be taken, the alien bursts out of its cocoon and eats Ronda before flying off.
Trouble ensues at the burger shop as the townsfolk rush in demanding meat, leaving the Tarazis and Nate to cook for their lives. They use Zari’s sleep time remedy on the burgers to calm the townsfolk, working in a unit with Zari wielding the totem to rush orders out. All is going great until Ava tells them about the alien coming their way. Luckily, Spooner takes the alien down before any more damage can be done.
With the mission over, Ava and Spooner have a drink, apologizing for their rash behavior but understanding the severity of their situations. Spooner reveals her backstory wherein she was abducted as a child along with her mother but was the only one to return to Earth. Ava gives Spooner a full membership to the Legends, letting her know that she has a home with them. The Tarazis make up and watch a news segment where they learn upon the death of the owners, the waitress from earlier assumed command and renamed Big Bang Burger into Big Belly Burger, the staple fast-food chain of the Arrowverse. While the Tarazis argue over who deserves the totem, Zari 1 (who resides in the totem) duplicates it, allowing both of them to become bearers.
