WARNING: Spoilers follow for Amazing Spider-Man #65 by Nick Spencer, Federico Vicentini, Federico Sabbatini, Alex Sinclair & VC’s Joe Caramagna, on sale now.
Spider-Man is in a war he knows he can’t win alone. He has worked a lot with his friends in The Order, but elects to call in bigger guns in his war against Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, and his supervillain minions.
Wilson Fisk wants to gain access to the Lifeline Tablet. The only person who knows where the pieces are is Spider-Man’s roommate, Boomerang. With Boomerang rushing off to take the fight to Kingpin, Spider-Man knows he needs all the help he can get, and that involves reuniting members of the New Avengers.

With Boomerang trying to find the last tablet piece, Bullseye has him in his sights. Villains like Mister Negative and Hammerhead stand ready to help capture him for the Get out of Jail Free card Fisk offered. Spider-Man knows he can’t bring in his teenage partners, but he also knows he needs “serious backup.” This led to the Web-Slinger calling on Wolverine, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Spider-Woman, and Hawkeye to help out. This looks like it will all play out in Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man: King’s Ransom #1 before the next stage of Spider-Man’s life starts in Amazing Spider-Man #66.
All of these heroes were, at one time or another, members of the New Avengers. Both Luke Cage and Hawkeye (as Ronin) even served as the team leader at one point. This team formed after the main Avengers broke up following Avengers: Disassembled. They first assembled at the suggestion of Captain America when a a breakout occurred at the Raft. Although their initial missions consisted of tracking down the escaped supervillains, the New Avengers primarily operated as a street-level team.
It makes sense that Spider-Man would seek the assistance of his former teammates to help in the approaching battle. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist all have an axe to grind against Wilson Fisk. When Fisk was running for mayor of Manhattan, he promised to crack down on costumed vigilantes. With Daredevil serving time in prison, Spider-Man and Luke Cage remain a thorn in Fisk’s side. Spider-Woman has always proven to be there when Spider-Man needed her. Hawkeye and Wolverine are the strangest additions to the group, especially with Wolverine dealing primarily with issues concerning Krakoa these days.
Spider-Man needs all the help he can get in this battle. Wilson Fisk will do anything he can to get the Lifeline Tablet. Kingpin wants to bring his wife back from the dead, and he won’t be stopped easily. He has recruited some of the worst villains in the city and as the mayor he also controls the police force. Spider-Man is facing an amazing battle ahead, but fortunately he has some pretty amazing friends at his side to see him through the coming struggle.
