In Street Fighter, Ken Masters was trained from childhood in martial arts with his friend and rival, Ryu. While the two are equally skilled, Ken has always been the polar opposite of his surrogate brother. While Ryu remained stoic and reserved, Ken grew more hot-headed and extroverted, visually represented by his flame-based attacks and red Gi. The two will often spar to test each other’s skills. Even though Ken has the potential to be the best, one thing holds him back — something that he’d never give up even for a chance at greatness.
Throughout their journey, Ken was always looked at as the more unpredictable of the two and was liable to start a fight due to his arrogance. However, through thick and thin, Ryu was always at his side to back him up. When it came to combat, Ken was much more unorthodox than his partner. This helped him keep up with other fighters as he almost always had the element of surprise on his side.

While he often embraced his egotism, his heart held the values of someone who cared deeply for those in need. Like Ryu, Ken wouldn’t hesitate to help his brother. When he isn’t trying to be the loudest in the room, Ken is incredibly easygoing. That relaxed attitude is what would eventually lead him to have his own family with his wife, Eliza.
Once he got married, Ken’s life changed. He quickly realized that Eliza and fighting couldn’t share his top priority. Smartly, he chose Eliza, and from then on, his life changed for the better. This shift in character was evidenced in Street Fighter IV when Ken showed apprehension to join the next World Tournament, as his wife was so close to giving birth to their first child.
Ken has since grown into a competent family man with his son, Mel, wanting to follow in his footsteps. But even though Ken has cooled off considerably since his first appearance, the fire within still rages. No matter where they are, he and Ryu will still reconnect for a friendly sparring match. And, should Ryu ever need Ken for something greater, he can still rely on him.
Ken Masters began as a hot-headed loudmouth who loved a good fight. But by seeing his growth into a family man focused on providing for those he loves, Ken has become one of the most well-rounded heroes in the series. Ken won’t be the number one fighter in the franchise. But for him, it’s more important to be the best dad and husband, and his character is better for it.
