Created by John Tobias and Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat debuted in 1992. The fighting game soon proved controversial due to its high levels of violence and gore. Still, that didn’t stop the series from proving immensely popular, and the first film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, which was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, released in 1995. While that movie was for many years the best-reviewed video game of all time, the sequel, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, is generally considered one of the worst. For its part, 2021’s Mortal Kombat holds a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, putting it above its two predecessors.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
