Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is officially Hideaki Anno’s highest-grossing movie of all time.
Japanese distributor and publisher Toei announced that director Hideaki Anno’s final entry in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, earned 8.28 billion yen (75.7 million USD) on roughly 5.4 million admissions in the 59 days since its release date in Japan, making it Anno’s highest-grossing film. His previous film that held the top spot was Shin Godzilla, which Anno wrote and directed. Shin Godzilla had a total domestic gross of 8.25 billion yen. Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is now the twenty-second highest-grossing film of all time at the Japanese box office and only needs 100 million yen (917 thousand USD) to surpass the twenty-first film, Stand by Me Doraemon.

During the April 11 stage greeting event in Tokyo, Anno expressed his hope that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 would overtake Shin Godzilla‘s gross and become the highest box office success of any of his films. Anno also stated that should his film exceed 10 billion yen at the box office, he believes it could revitalize and strengthen the animation industry. In addition to becoming Anno’s highest-grossing film, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 also previously set the record for the highest IMAX earnings on opening day in Japan, grossing nearly 740 thousand USD.
Even 25 years after the original anime’s conclusion, the Evangelion franchise continues to be immensely successful. The original Evangelion anime series was picked up and controversially redubbed by Netflix in 2019, exposing younger audiences to the classic mecha series. The recently concluded tetralogy of Evangelion films boasts two of the highest-grossing anime movies of all time.
