Being a superhero like Marvel Comics’ Captain America means a lot more than just throwing a shield and fighting the bad guy. It means being a leader for those around him, setting an example for them to aspire to. There’s a reason why he’s so respected among his peers.
That being said, not all heroes have fan clubs. Some of them are outright hated by more than just the villains they face. Those heroes are disliked by their fellow crime fighters, the authorities, and even the general public. That’s probably because they make a lot of really bad choices or do more killing than saving. Whatever the reasons, such heroes would have to work pretty hard to be the next Cap.
10 U.S. Agent Rubs Everyone The Wrong Way
Long before The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuted on Disney+, U.S. Agent was upsetting Marvel’s heroes on a regular basis. Trying to replace Steve Rogers as Captain America certainly wasn’t a good start.
His brusque, authoritarian attitude drove a lot of other heroes nuts. Many of them view him as being only slightly better than The Punisher, which in superhero circles is not a favorable comparison. That makes the Agent just slightly better than a serial killer, more or less.
9 Bishop Isn’t Always Right
The timeline in X-Men comics can get pretty convoluted. Several characters come from different realities, futures, and timelines, some of which no longer exist. And any attempt to clean these origins up has only made things more confusing.
Bishop was essentially a mutant police officer in one such future who traveled back in time. While he was a valued member of the team at first, he eventually went a bit off the deep end trying to make possible futures not happen. He lost a lot of friends and made a lot of new enemies that way.
8 Namor Is Usually Out For Himself
Not to put too fine of a point on the situation, but Namor is an arrogant jerk. The ruler of Atlantis started his superhero career fighting alongside Captain America in World War II. He would go on to lead Atlantis in several conflicts against the surface world, though that’s not the problem.
The reason a lot of heroes really hate the guy is because he keeps trying to steal Sue Storm from Reed Richards. While their marriage isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, actively trying to break them up because he has a massive crush on her just isn’t cool at all.
7 Elektra Can Get Pretty Stabby
Speaking of bad relationships, Daredevil and Elektra have a complicated one at absolute best. They have fought against each other as many times as they have worked together. Being that she spends a lot of time trying to stab him, that would make their home life quite awkward.
While Daredevil and Wolverine have tended to be forgiving of Elektra’s murderous ways, most Marvel heroes haven’t been. They know that Elektra cannot be trusted as she’s always working her own angles. She’s a hero only when it’s convenient to her.
6 Nick Fury Makes The Hard Choices
When it comes to being in the game for a long time, few people can match Nick Fury. He fought in World War II, then went on to become the most prominent spy in the world. That being said, extremely few people had any idea what he was up to most of the time.
Nick Fury often ran plans within plans on top of other plans. His closest friends and allies learned to accept this reality. But not knowing what was going on was too much for a lot of heroes like Tony Stark. No one every really knew where they stood with Nick Fury, or if they were even talking to the real Nick Fury.
5 Gambit Played A Big Part In The Mutant Massacre
One of the most devastating stories in X-Men history was 1986’s “Mutant Massacre.” In addition to various mutant teams, the crossover event also included Thor, Power Pack, and Daredevil. At the crux of it were the Marauders, slaughtering hundreds of mutants called Morlocks in the sewers of New York.
What was eventually discovered was that Gambit played a secret but key part in this massacre. While he didn’t personally kill anyone, he helped the Marauders in the task given to them by Mr. Sinister. A lot of heroes, including some of his fellow X-Men, have never forgiven him for his involvement.
4 Sentry Is Just Barely A Hero
Marvel has a few heroes that come close to matching Superman in power, with Sentry possibly being the closest. His levels are off the chart, making him one of the most devastating people on the planet. Sentry once hauled Carnage into orbit and tore him in half.
But Sentry is also incredibly unstable, and is prone to making some extremely bad decisions. A big one was working with Norman Osborn when he took over S.H.I.E.L.D. Many heroes see Sentry as a potential threat waiting to cause problems, and simply do not trust him as a result.
3 Hulk Tends To Bring Out The Hate
Few major heroes in the Marvel Universe are as controversial at the Hulk. The Jade Giant is power and rage personified, someone who isn’t afraid to take on any enemy and may actually be immortal.
But his fellow heroes are equally split as to whether he’s good or evil. Hulk has arguably done more harm than good over the years, leading to other heroes like the secretive Illuminati to try and get rid of him— which turned out poorly for them. The best way to handle the Hulk seems to be just leaving him alone.
2 Heroes Would Like Deadpool More If He Shut Up
Some people think of Deadpool as another graduate of the Weapon X program. In reality, he essentially flunked out of the program and became a hero because he fell in love with a member of X-Force back in the day.
Still, Deadpool has become a fan favorite over the years. The same is not true of his fellow heroes, many whom do not like him at all. In particular, the X-Men are not big on Deadpool and have done everything they can to keep him off the team on a few occasions. His constant nattering definitely hasn’t helped his cause.
1 The Punisher Doesn’t Care What People Think Of Him
After returning home from war, Frank Castle watched as his family was slaughtered in the park by the mafia. His wife and kids were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Castle survived and became The Punisher, and began a search for revenge that would dominate his life.
Castle killed the people responsible for murdering his family a long time ago. The Punisher has since transitioned to essentially being a serial killer, something that has not been lost on other heroes. Very few of them are willing to work with Frank, with most looking to put him behind bars for good.
