Naruto shows Kawaki the ropes of life in Konoha as they scour the town for a vase to replace the one he broke at home. Naruto ends up at a taiyaki stall, where he and Kawaki find Sarada and Cho-Cho hanging out. Naruto buys everyone a treat and Cho-Cho takes a lot, causing Kawaki to make fun of her greediness. The Hokage quickly condemns this and encourages him not to be a bully, just eat.

When Kawaki bites in, he’s surprised at how good the sweets taste, which makes sense, considering his past. Kawaki grew up in poverty, barely eating before Jigen bought him from his alcoholic dad. He was often starved as punishment and incentive to work, so the idea of snacks is new. But he shows a greedy edge too, as Sarada asks him how his chocolate-filled one tastes. He’s enjoying it, but doesn’t offer to share, prompting another swift scolding from Naruto.

Naruto tries to teach Kawaki about the value of sharing, especially food, as it helps unite people. It builds friendships and bridges cultures as a meal or snack gives people a special opportunity to bond. Sharing meals with others was a big part of Naruto’s childhood. As a poor orphan, he relied on the generosity of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen, and his teachers Iruka, Kakashi and Jiraiya, who he grew closer to over their shared meals. It’s why he takes Kawaki to Ichiraku Ramen, where Naruto spent most of his teen years and money.

There, they scarf down bowls of ramen in a scene that recalls Naruto and Naruto’s early days. Sure, he’s still eating a lot, as he uses many more shadow clones to help on Hokage duty, but he’s tempered it back. He knows he was a glutton in the past but now he has to set an example.

Nonetheless, he’s glad Kawaki’s eating so much. He’s seen Kawaki at his dinner table and he knows the boy never got three square meals. Thus, the more he enjoys himself and his food, the higher the probability Kawaki will forget his struggles and embrace the Hidden Leaf.
