Peacock has greenlit Girl in the Woods — a horror series based on Crypt TV’s YouTube short films The Door in the Woods and The Girl in the Woods — with Marvel’s Jessica Jones alum Krysten Ritter set to serve as director.
According to Deadline, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock has ordered eight episodes of Girl in the Woods. The show is set in the Pacific Northwest and follows a girl named Carrie, who escapes from her “mysterious, cult-like colony that guards the world from monsters hidden behind a secret door within the woods.” Ritter will direct the show’s first four episodes, with Jacob Chase (Come Play) directing the latter four episodes. Casey Modderno (The Birch) will serve as head writer on the series.

Ritter is known for her role as Jane Margolis on AMC’s award-winning crime drama Breaking Bad. In 2015, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jessica Jones, starring in all three seasons of the character’s eponymous Netflix series, as well as in the crossover mini-series The Defenders. It was through Jessica Jones that Ritter made her directorial debut, helming “A.K.A You’re Welcome,” the second episode of Season 3.
Crypt TV was launched in 2015 by Jack Davis and Eli Roth, with financial backing from Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions. Directed by Joey Greene, the short film The Door in the Woods was released on YouTube in 2018, starring Carissa Bazler as Carrie, as well as Eric Prochnau, Roman Dean George, Cameron Rico, Chance Keller and Erica B. Marie Avila. The Girl in the Woods, a sequel directed by Roxine Helberg, followed suit in 2020. The Girl in the Woods picks the story up seven years later, with Carrie now being played by Cobra Kai‘s Peyton List, who is joined by Harold & Kumar alum Kal Penn. That being said, Deadline explains that Peacock’s Girl in the Woods television series will feature a new cast.
“Girl in the Woods is Crypt’s most ambitious adaption of our IP to date,” Davis said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have such special talents in Krysten Ritter, Casey Modderno and Jacob Chase bringing this series to life with grounded characters taking on meaningful themes and plenty of scares. Crypt prides itself on telling norm breaking, innovative genre stories and our audience is going to love watching this show on Peacock, who has been a spectacular partner.”
“As a huge fan of horror and all things coming of age, this is one of the most exciting pilot scripts I’ve gotten my hands on,” Ritter added. “I fell in love with the characters, the writing, the setting and the themes the second I read it. I also loved Crypt’s original short The Door in the Woods and the universe they are building. I’m so thrilled to have the opportunity to helm this badass female driven monster hunting series with Jane Casey Modderno, Crypt and Peacock.”
Peacock’s Girl in the Woods is written by Casey Modderno and directed by Krysten Ritter and Jacob Chase. The eight-episode series does not have a release window, nor is any casting information available at this time.
