The Asylum’s newest mockbuster, Ape vs. Monster, features a conflict inspired by Godzilla vs. Kong.
Ape vs. Monster centers on a primate named Abraham and a scorpion who are both exposed to nuclear waste, causing their size and intelligence to vastly increase. Abraham soon takes on the scorpion/lizard monster in a series of battles, causing widespread destruction — with their final clash taking place atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The cast includes Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) as a government official.
The Asylum is no stranger to the “mockbuster” genre, which often produces films that bear more than vague similarities to highly anticipated blockbuster films. Its previous efforts include Atlantic Rim and Transmorpher, and even Avengers Grimm which saw multiple fairy tale characters joining forces in the style of The Avengers.
Godzilla vs. Kong pitted the two titular Titans against each other, serving as the culmination of Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse. The film has been a massive box office success and serves as one of the few pandemic-era films to reach $400 million at the box office. Director Adam Wingard being courted to direct another MonsterVerse film as well as a ThunderCats adaptation for Warner Bros.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
