With the 93rd Academy Awards drawing this year’s lengthy award season to a close, the winners of the night have garnered some well-deserved interest. With many of these films having a digital release of some sort, audiences may be wondering how they can enjoy these esteemed movies. From the streets of Chicago to rural Arkansas, here are the 2021 Oscar winners and where you can watch them.
The Father
The Father, directed by Florian Zeller, took home both Best Adapted Screenplay, an award that went to Zeller and Christopher Hampton, and Best Actor, which went to Anthony Hopkins. The film is about an elderly father resisting aid from his family as he deals with Alzheimer’s. Judas and the Black Messiah
Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King, won awards for Best Original Song, with H.E.R, Tiara Thomas and Dernst Emile II taking home the Oscar for their song “Fight for You,” and Best Supporting Actor, won by Daniel Kaluuya. The film examines the life of the young revolutionary Fred Hampton and the FBI informant William O’Neal, who is tasked with infiltrating the Black Panther Party. Judas and the Black Messiah is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Youtube and Vudu. It is also playing in select theaters.
Nomadland
Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao, won for Best Director, Best Actress — Frances McDormand — and Best Picture, amd Zhao made history as the second woman and first woman of color to win Best Director. Nomadland is about house less traveler Fern and the community of van-dwelling nomads she meets as she looks for work across the country. Nomadland is available for free with a Hulu subscription and to rent on Youtube, Google Play, Vudu, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. It is also playing in select theaters.
Minari
Minari, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, won for Best Supporting Actress, an award that went to Yuh-jung Youn. Youn is the first Korean actress and the second Asian woman to win the award, the first since Miyoshi Umeki won for Sayonara in 1958. Minari is about an immigrant family from South Korea in the 1980s who move to rural Arkansas and pursue the American dream. It is available to rent on Youtube, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV and Google Play. It is also playing is select theaters.
Soul
Soul, directed by Pete Docter, co-directed by Kemp Powers and produced by Dana Murray, won for Best Original Score, going to Trent Reznor, Jon Batiste and Atticus Ross. It also won Best Animated Film. Soul is about a music teacher who dreams of being a jazz musician, but his soul gets separated from his body. Soul is available for free with a Disney+ subscription and for rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Youtube and Google Play.
Mank
Mank, directed by David Fincher, won Best Production Design, going to Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale, and Best Cinematography, Erik Messerschmidt. Mank is a film about the screenwriter of Citizen Kane, Herman J. Mankiewicz, and it is available for free with a Netflix subscription.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe, won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, going to Mia Neal, Sergio Lopez-Rivera and Jamika Wilson. It also won for Best Costume Design, Ann Roth. The film is about Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” and it’s a dramatization of her recording session to produce the song “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” The film is available for free with a Netflix subscription.
My Octopus Teacher
My Octopus Teacher, directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, won Best Documentary Feature. It follows South African filmmaker, Craig Foster, documenting his bond with a common octopus while diving in a kelp forest. My Octopus Teacher is available for free to stream on Netflix with a subscription.
Colette
Colette, directed by Anthony Giacchino and produced by Alice Doyard, won Best Short Documentary. It is about Colette Marin-Catherine, a former member of the French Resistance, traveling to Germany to visit the Nazi concentration camp that her brother was killed in. It is available for free without any fees on Youtube, distributed by The Guardian.
Sound of Metal
Sound of Metal, directed by Darius Marder, won Best Sound, going to Nicholas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés and Phillip Bladh, as well as Best Film Editing, Mikkel E.G. Nielsen. Sound of Metal features a metal drummer’s struggle with accepting his sudden hearing loss and how his relationships with others and the world change as a result. It is available for free to stream on Amazon Prime with a subscription.
Another Round
Another Round, directed by Thomas Vinterberg, won Best International Feature Film. It is about four teachers who collectively decide to do an experiment where they drink during the day to keep things interesting. Another Round is available on Hulu for free with a subscription and can be rented from Youtube, Vudu, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
If Anything Happens I Love You
If Anything Happens I Love You, directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier, won Best Animated Short Film. It is about the grief of two parents who have grown apart after the death of their daughter in a school shooting. If Anything Happens I Love You is a Netflix exclusive and can only be streamed on the platform.
Two Distant Strangers
Two Distant Strangers, directed by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, won Best Live-Action Short Film. The short film explores the reality of police brutality through a sci-fi lens as a Black man gets stuck in a time loop where he is repeatedly shot to death by an NYPD officer. Two Distant Strangers can be streamed for free on Netflix with a subscription.
Tenet
Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan, won Best Visual Effects, going to Andrew Jackson, David Lee, Andrew Lockley and Scott Fisher. The film is a time travel adventure, following a CIA agent, known as the Protagonist, who learns time manipulation in an effort to save the world from a future threat. Tenet is available to rent on Youtube, Apple TV, Vudu, Google Play and Amazon Prime Video.
Promising Young Woman
Promising Young Woman, directed and written by Emerald Fennell, won Best Original Screenplay. The film is about a medical school dropout who concocts a revenge plan against the man who sexually assaulted her best friend and those peripherally responsible for the lack of consequences. Promising Young Woman is available to rent on Youtube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and Google Play. It is also playing in select theaters.
