Yu-Gi-Oh: 10 Strategies Every Duelist Should Learn | CBR

The Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise was first released in 1999 and has endured over the last 22 years, both as an anime and a trading card game. And even though it’s an old franchise, Konami continues to release new content for the game to duelists of all ages.

Duelists have seen many changes and expansions over the years, which have allowed for a wide variety of play styles. It’s a lot of fun to pick up an interesting archetype and study its card effects to figure out how to use it in a duel. Each archetype tends to stick to a certain playstyle, so what’s most important in constructing decks is considering which strategies will best serve a duelist’s purposes and then choosing archetypes from there.

10 Use High Attack Monsters To Blast An Opponent’s Life Points With A Beatdown Strategy

Beatdown strategies focus on using battle damage as the main method of reducing an opponent’s life points. As such, it relies little on support or safety cards and instead focuses on getting out high-attack monsters. There are different types of Beatdown decks, but the Blue-Eyes White Dragon archetype is known for having a particularly powerful damage output. Players need to Ritual Summon to get it out, but Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon’s 4000 attack points make it a great beater and its card effects make it hard to get rid of.

9 Burn Strategies Let Players Use Card Effects To Blast An Opponent’s Life Points

Burn strategies typically forego battle damage in lieu of card effects. The effects can come from any type of card in the deck, whether it be a Monster, Trap, or Spell. Accordingly, there are several types of Burn decks out there, including the Anti-Cure deck.

This deck is also known as the Nurse Burn deck, as it relies on the effect of Darklord Nurse Reficule. Any time a card effect tries to replenish the opponent’s life points, Darklord Nurse Reficule’s card effect will turn them into damage points instead. There are several Trap cards that will replenish life points, so be sure to have them available for this Burn combo.

8 A Control Strategy Will Let Players Take Over An Opponent’s Cards, Giving An Advantage

Using Control strategies in decks will let players move opponents’ cards around the field, destroy them, or take over the card’s effects. The main goal of this strategy is to limit what an opponent can do by taking their cards away for the player’s use instead.

The Vampire archetype is a fun way to build control strategies. One way Vampire-themed cards excel at taking control of an opponent’s cards is by Special Summoning them to the player’s side of the field when they’re defeated in battle. Vampire Fraulein is an especially potent card for this.

7 Aggressively Stop Opponents In Their Tracks With A Stunning Strategy

Stunning an opponent interrupts them during their plays, effectively crippling them during their turn. This keeps opponents from getting their own card strategies off. Fairy-Type monsters excel at stunning, and a Fairy Stun deck can be very effective. A key card in this strategy is Archlord Kristya. It’s relatively easy to get on the field and has the added effect of preventing either player from Special Summoning monsters. This can reduce an opponent’s options and force them to work around their own strategy.

6 Defeat Opponents Straight From One’s Hand With An Exodia Strategy

Exodia From Yu-Gi-Oh

The point of Exodia is to win in one turn by playing all five pieces of the Forbidden One from a duelist’s hand. As such, this strategy often relies on drawing as many cards as possible on a player’s turn. There are different ways to construct decks for an Exodia strategy.

One method involves using Destiny HERO cards. Destiny HERO – Diamond Dude will let players check the next card in their deck. If it’s a spell card, it gets sent to the Graveyard and can be used during the player’s next Main Phase with no cost.

5 Use A Lockdown Strategy To Prevent Opponents From Getting Any Plays Off

A Lockdown strategy is slightly different from a Stunning strategy in how it’s designed. While Stunning relies more on Traps stopping an opponent’s play in the moment, Lockdown sets the field so they don’t have the opportunity to play at all. A classic Lockdown strategy includes the fusion monster The Last Warrior From Another Planet. This card’s effect requires players to destroy all their controlled monsters, but then it prevents either player from Summoning any monsters. And The Last Warrior has plenty of attack points to chip away at the opponent’s life points.

4 Win The Duel By Using A Milling Strategy To Get Opponents To Deck Out

The inability to draw a card at the beginning of the player’s turn is one win condition for Yu-Gi-Oh! duels. It’s an unconventional way to win but forcing an opponent to deck out before they can deplete a player’s life points can be an exciting gamble. Monsters like Morphing Jar and Needle Worm, although quite old, are still great for getting opponents to draw cards. Each card effect states an opponent must draw five cards, quickly running them through their deck.

3 A Stalling Strategy Will Slow Opponents Down While Duelists Fulfill Win Conditions

Yu-Gi-Oh! duels allow several ways to win, and some are quite unorthodox but fun to pull off. Some win conditions take more time to get off than others, and this is where a Stalling strategy will come in handy. The Spell card Final Countdown, for example, will allow a player to win after 20 turns have passed, making a Stalling strategy essential.

The Field Spell Mystic Mine is great for stalling. If one player has more monsters than the other, that player cannot activate effects or declare an attack, effectively drawing out the duel.

2 Become A Jack Of All Trades By Utilizing A Toolbox Strategy

Toolbox strategy decks are proverbial Frankensteins–they don’t follow any specific plan and instead are made up of a wide variety of parts to overcome various strategies. Toolbox strategies make extensive use of the Extra Deck to make sure it’s prepared for whatever comes its way. It’s a Swiss Army Knife-type approach for only the most well-read Yu-Gi-Oh! duelists, as Toolbox strategies cannot win if the player doesn’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of their cards. A Toolbox strategy will include cards that can deal with a variety of effects, making the deck resilient.

1 Stand Up To Some Of The Best Decks In The Game By Utilizing An Anti-Meta Strategy

Meta decks are based on the current best cards in the game and can dominate duels until effective strategies are made against them. This is where Anti-Meta strategies come in–strategies that are specifically designed to resist and defeat Meta decks. The strongest decks heavily utilize Special Summoning, and being able to stop them from Summoning is a great technique. Cards such as Vanity’s Fiend and Vanity’s Ruler prevent either player from Special Summoning, so it can stop Meta decks in their tracks.
