Ironheart‘s found its lead writer.
The upcoming Marvel Studios/Disney+ series tapped screenwriter and poet Chinaka Hodge (TNT’s Snowpiercer) to serve as the show’s head writer, as reported by Variety.
Hodge previously worked on the Apple series reboot of Amazing Stories and has published two books of poetry titled For Girls with Hips: Collected Poems and Writings and Dated Emcees. She’s also an accomplished playwright, having penned Chasing Mehserle and Mirrors in Every Corner.
News of Ironheart‘s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe broke in December 2020, during Disney’s Investor Day event. At the time, it was announced that the upcoming MCU series would star actor Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart — the genius inventor who reverse engineers a suit of armor from pieces of Tony Stark’s suit. Thorne previously starred in the Oscar-winning film Judas and the Black Messiah and 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk.
In Marvel Comics, Riri Williams was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato. Riri debuted in 2016’s Invincible Iron Man #7 as a 15-year old engineering student attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The young inventor decides to scavenge bits from Iron Man’s suit and ends up creating one that can rival — and at times beat — Stark’s capabilities. Riri replaced Tony Stark as Iron Man after he went into a coma in Civil War II, and later took up the mantle of Ironheart upon Stark’s return.
Ironheart is a member of the Champions, a superhero team comprised of other young heroes from the Marvel Universe. The team functions as a younger version of the Avengers, with the roster consisting of Ms. Marvel (who is also receiving a Disney+ series), Miles Morales Spider-Man, Nova and Vision’s daughter, Viv Vision.
The Marvel character has previously appeared on the small screen in smaller roles, notably in the animated series Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron, voiced by Sofia Wylie. Riri’s character also appears in the animated series Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was also voiced by Wylie. However, Riri has yet to make a live-action appearance nor debut on the big screen.
At the time of this writing, there’s no set release date or other casting announcements for Ironheart.
