Star Wars is known for having some great characters but not all of them are winners. One of the most annoying characters in the Saga is Jar Jar Binks. While there is a certain segment of Internet fans who have pushed a Darth Jar Jar fan theory to explain the bumbling character’s annoying peccadilloes, there’s no denying that the character as shown is one of the Saga’s most irritating characters.
However, the Sequel Trilogy made its shares of mistakes and one of them was with Kylo Ren. Ren has his share of detractors and Lucasfilm didn’t do him any favors. The argument can be made that Ren is just as annoying as Binks, even if he isn’t as bumbling.
10 All Of The Focus On Him In The Last Jedi Took Away Time From Other Characters
The Last Jedi has lots of detractors but one can’t deny that it did a lot for Kylo Ren, truly making him one of the main characters of the Sequel Trilogy. However, it came at the cost of other characters- Finn and Poe, who were placed into widely panned subplots and were less important going forward.
Elevating Kylo Ren to such an important part of the trilogy took time away from the heroes and that’s never a good idea. For fans who wanted more from Finn and Poe, it was endlessly annoying for Ren to suddenly be elevated and take up screen time that could have been used to flesh them out.
9 He Was Supposed To Be Dangerous But Kept Losing
Kylo Ren was set up to be the Sequel Trilogy’s Vader level threat, a danger to the heroes that would drive three movies. The first scene he was in built that, as he was shown to be a ruthless powerful Force user. Unfortunately, he didn’t even come close to being that daunting in the rest of the films.
After his defeat of Finn, he pretty much got slapped around every time he fought Rey and only killed faceless goons in battle. Sure, he killed Snope but not in a fight. It was super annoying that the trilogy’s face of evil was so ineffectual.
8 All The Vader Worship Shows How Little Thought He Put Into Anything
On first glance, it’s a cool visual to have Ren speaking to his grandfather’s helmet. However, that’s about it. When one thinks about it, does it really make any sense? It’s like a teenager worshiping a “Satanic” rock star after it’s revealed that he was just playing a part for years.
Being evil did a lot to mess up Ren’s life but his Vader worship just shows how little thought he put into his whole persona. It was beyond ridiculous and any viewer who thought about the scene for more than one second couldn’t help but be annoyed by it.
7 His Lightsaber’s Spitting And Sparking Made No Sense From A Practical Standpoint
From a production and merchandising standpoint, Ren’s lightsaber makes sense- it was supposed to be a cool visual that would make fans want to shell out money for one of their own. However, from an in-universe standpoint, why didn’t he get a new focusing crystal? The whole reason the blade acted like it did is because of the cracked crystal and he could have replaced that.
The First Order had a lot of Kyber crystals- they needed them for Starkiller Base. He could have gotten another one, bled it, then fixed it. The only reason to keep it the way it was is because he wanted it to look cool and edgy, which is just super annoying.
6 He Throws Constant Little Temper Tantrums
The scene were Kylo Ren carves up a console on his flagship is nearly as funny as anything that Jar Jar Binks did but way, way more irritating. The best part of the scene was when the officer walked in on it, then backed out of the room as if this was a normal thing that no one was allowed to witness.
Or what about the time he destroyed his own helmet because Snoke was mean to him? It was hilarious in all of the wrong ways, exactly like just about any scene with Jar Jar Binks in it. His little temper tantrums made him into a massive joke.
5 All Of The Reylo Drama
TLJ giveth and TLJ taketh away. While the movie did a lot to make the character better, it also introduced Ren’s weird obsession with Rey and launched a ship that nearly sunk the Sequel Trilogy- Reylo. There’s just so much wrong with the whole thing.
It was annoying to fans who weren’t into shipping culture as it infested every corner of the Internet that spoke about the Sequel Trilogy. A lot of fans hated the whole subplot so much that they started to find Ren to be annoying.
4 He Rebuilt His Mask -Erasing The Development That Came With Its Destruction
Ren destroying his mask was a big deal in his character development, one that was done away with in the next movie. Somehow, he found all of the pieces of his mask and had them put together, except this time there were “cool” red veins where the pieces were joined.
With the advanced technology at hand, there should have been ways to put the helmet back together seamlessly.
3 He Was Never Allowed To Be The Main Villain
TLJ set up Ren to take over the First Order, in a moment of character development that was pretty fitting for the character. However, Lucasfilm apparently wanted their awesome dark villain to be put on the road of redemption, even if he didn’t deserve it.
So, somehow Palpatine returned and Ren was relegated to background villain once again. It wasn’t annoying in the grating way of Jar Jar Binks but it was annoying for anyone interested in the character’s development.
2 That He Fell For Luke’s Trick
Luke’s trick at the end of TLJ bought the Resistance enough time to get away but it was also something that only a fool would fall for. It’s long been established that Force users can sense others and sense Force energy. So, why didn’t Ren know Luke was tricking him? Couldn’t he sense he wasn’t really there?
Even if Luke did something to keep Ren from sensing him, he literally just saw a fifty-something-year-old man get blasted by artillery. The fact he couldn’t put two and two together that it was a trick of some kind made him look hilarious in the worst possible way.
1 The Method Of His Redemption Was Poorly Done
So, Kylo Ren loses yet another fight to Rey and she heals him. He comes back to life and she’s gone but Han Solo is there and they have a heart to heart that makes him realize the error of his ways and reach out for redemption. Except it was all a trick and it killed his mom to pull it off.
Kylo Ren was redeemed by the same trick that beat him in the last movie. He was tricked into redemption. It’s easily one of the funniest moments in the entire trilogy and puts a bow on his annoying character arc.
