WARNING: The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Season 5, Episode 4, “Make It Happen, Shinso!” now streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation and Hulu.
The latest episode of My Hero Academia dives deep into the fierce rivalry between classes 1-A and 1-B, proving how savage U.A. can be at times. It’s a 5-vs-4 match, with Hitoshi Shinso showing off his refined Brainwashing Quirk against Class 1-B’s team, but he’s not the only star around here. Tsuyu Asui and Jurota Shishida prove how strong animalistic Quirks can be.
Up until now, Quirks such as One For All, Half-Hot-Half-Cold and Bakugo’s Explosion Quirk have been among the most dazzling. However, animal-based Quirks are on the rise as several characters, including pro heroes, are proving the fierce power of Mother Nature.

Three U.A. students and one pro hero have already made a name for themselves with animal-based Quirks. Koji Koda in particular has proved even mediocre Quirks can be trained into something incredible. He was shy and unassertive at first, carrying a pathological fear of insects until his teammate Kyoka Jiro talked him out of it. Koji remembered his determination to become a gentle but strong hero, summoning a swarm of creepy crawlies to overwhelm a terrified Present Mic and secure his team’s victory.
Koji was a real dark horse until then, but now he’s making better use of his Anivoice Quirk and his creativity. During the provisional hero license exam he used flocks of birds to scatter and disorient his many enemies, and here he uses birds to scout out Class 1-B’s team. Unfortunately, Koji is soon captured, cutting his moment in the spotlight short.
Koji’s Anivoice ability has the most obvious nature theme, but the world of animal Quirks doesn’t end there. Jurota Shishida made his big debut in the last two episodes, acting like My Hero Academia’s version of X-Men‘s Hank McCoy/Beast. Jurota has shaggy fur, enlarged canines and a strong body on his side, combined with his human intelligence and a strong nose. He can sniff out his enemies from a mile away, a serious challenge for Class 1-A’s team to overcome.
That’s where Tsuyu Asui and her Frog Quirk come in. Tsuyu has always been good at hopping around, swimming and using her long tongue like a true frog, but in Season 5 Episode 4 she takes her abilities a step further. She secretes a strong-smelling mucus and coats Denki and Hitoshi in it to make them smell the same, successfully throwing off Jurota’s nose when they approach Class 1-B’s team. That, combined with Tsuyu’s ambush tactics and strong tongue, secures Class 1-A’s victory. It also helps that Hitoshi Shinso, who has been training with Shota Aizawa, backs up Tsuyu with some serious Brainwashing tricks.
In the world of pros, the #2 hero Hawks is also proving animal Quirks are worthy of respect. His Fierce Wings Quirk manifests as two red hawk-like wings on his back. Hawks can fly at incredible speeds with those wings, giving him an obvious advantage in mobility and height. He can also float around those feathers and move people or objects remotely.
Hawks often does this to evacuate civilians, while on offense he can use his largest feathers as ultra-sharp swords. He uses all these avian talents to back up Endeavor during the battle with the fearsome Hooded Nomu, and no doubt Hawks’ animalistic Quirk — along with Tsuyu, Jurota and others — will shine again in the future.
