Mortal Kombat screenwriter Greg Russo teased that the follow-up to Netflix’s 2017 live-action Death Note movie will be more faithful to the original manga.
“And Death Note, I’m a huge fan of the manga, I’m a huge fan of the original source material and I think it’s one of the greatest mangas ever written,” Russo explained to We Got This Covered. “And so for me, I didn’t play any role in Death Note, the first film that Netflix did, but I came in with kind of a point of view with what I wanted to do in a sequel. And part of that is I wanted to go back to the source material.”

“I wanted to go back to what made the original stuff so great, and so we’re doing something really neat with it,” he continued. “Hopefully there will be more info on it soon, but it’s going to be… it’s not going to be exactly what you’re expecting. And I mean that in a very enticing way.”
The first live-action Death Note movie was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Charles Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides and Jeremy Slater. The film, which was released on Netflix, received mixed marks from both the Death Note fanbase and general critics. However, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos dubbed the film a “sizeable” success in terms of viewership.
Based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata and directed by Adam Wingard, Death Note stars Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. The film is currently available on Netflix.
