Mass Effect: The Life of Sovereign, the Hands-On Reaper | CBR

The Mass Effect universe is packed with colorful and fascinating characters of all species, from the roguish Garrus Vakarian to the brooding Thane Krios and the playful but grieving Kasumi Goto. However, some of the most intriguing characters are not even alive at all, like Legion, the ultimate (and friendly) Geth. Then, there is Sovereign, a living ship.

Sovereign is no ordinary battleship. It is a Reaper, and the first one that Commander Shepard ever faced in battle. Sovereign acted as a preview for what was to come, and they had a unique role to play in the Reapers’ mission to maintain balance between organics and synthetics. Sovereign is a ship and a character at the same time, and Mass Effect wouldn’t be the same without it.

The Nature & Role of Nazara, AKA Sovereign in Mass Effect

The Reaper known to Shepard as “Sovereign” does not call itself that. Instead, this Reaper’s name is Nazara, a name that Legion mentioned to Shepard upon their first meeting. No doubt “Nazara” is an ancient name, and it’s unclear if Nazara made up that name itself or if it was bestowed by another.

What’s more, Nazara/Sovereign is not a person, but rather a vessel containing countless conscious computer programs. This is analogous to Legion itself: a small legion of artificial people, all living within one physical shell. Sovereign is a whole community working in tandem, being a “they” on the inside. Sovereign once told Shepard that each Reaper, including themself, is like a nation, independent and free of all weaknesses. Despite that, possibly for convenience’s sake, Sovereign said “I” and “me” when speaking to Shepard on Virmire.

Sovereign is not a regular member of the main Reaper fleet sitting in the empty space beyond the Milky Way Galaxy. Sovereign stays in the galaxy at all times, serving as a field agent for the Reapers in between extinction cycles. For the most part, Sovereign’s role is to patrol the galaxy every few centuries to take stock of galactic civilization, reacting to any unforeseen complications or problems. No one ever knows where or what Sovereign is, so there is practically no risk of them getting mobbed and destroyed by multiple fleets. Sovereign getting cornered at the battle of the Citadel was highly unusual.

Sovereign is also tasked with indoctrinating useful organic minions to further the Reaper cause, especially if there are any complications with the development of galactic civilization. For the most part, things go according to plan. However, once in a while, Sovereign might need to assemble a small army of indoctrinated minions and send them across the galaxy to get everything ready for the next Reaper invasion. After all, the Reapers don’t seek a fun challenge when invading; they want everything to go by the numbers with no complications or snags. Sovereign is always there to set the table, so to speak.

Sovereign’s Actions Before & During Mass Effect

During the extinction of the Prothean race, a handful of Prothean scientists disrupted the Reaper signal that goes to the keepers, meaning the Reapers wouldn’t be able to activate the Citadel’s mass relay functions during the next invasion. The main Reaper fleet was powerless to change this, so it fell to Sovereign to take care of things.

By the 2100s, the Reaper invasion was overdue, and Sovereign realized that the usual signal was failing to get through to the keepers, so they launched an investigation, patrolling the galaxy, gathering and indoctrinating minions. Among them was Saren Arterius, a Turian Spectre. Sovereign also approached the Geth and convinced some of them to take their side. The Geth, seeing Sovereign as the machine god, eagerly signed up, becoming heretics in the eyes of most other Geth.

By 2183, Sovereign was ready to take serious action. On Sovereign’s behalf, Saren attacked Eden Prime to access the Prothean beacon, then raced across the galaxy to find the Mu Relay and take it to visit the world of Ilos. From there, Saren took the miniature mass relay to get into the Citadel’s main control system and manually activate the Citadel for the Reaper fleet. Not only that, but Sovereign and Saren also saw the value in the Krogan race, and tried to clone an army of them on Virmire (until Commander Shepard blew up that facility).

At this point, Sovereign was done hiding in the shadows, and they personally visited Eden Prime to help Saren and the Geth attack. Finally, Sovereign led the Geth heretic fleet to battle against the Citadel’s defenders, causing untold destruction until the human Systems Alliance fleet arrived to surround and finish off Sovereign once and for all.
